  • Broken Base:
    • The show is marketed and initially unfolds like a psychological thriller in the vein of Gone Girl. Audiences and critics have had intensely mixed reactions to the fact that it veers into a paranormal story about a Body Snatcher who uses Astral Projection with a Downer Ending. Some loved it and some absolutely hated it.
    • On top of that, plenty of people pointed out that the plot revolves around a Depraved Homosexual who is jealous of his beautiful, rich straight best friend so he steals her body and kills her, thereby playing into the trope of predatory LBGTQ+ characters. On top of that, people were disturbed that Adele fakes an abuse allegation.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: More than a few critics pointed out that the final sequence is heavily influenced by/borrowed from Us with the film doing the same premise much better.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Louise is given a Race Lift from the novel, but it doesn't seem like a word of the script was changed because of it. Consequently, elements of the story that could have been more complicated or interesting are not. Rob!Adele shows no racial animosity toward Louise, even upon being revealed to be psychotic and treating Marianne in an ageist and misogynist way. Later, Rob!Louise is shown adjusting to Louise's deeper voice but not having to adjust at all to being Black. He is implied to be continuing a life of privilege as David's wife, with no consequences. Meanwhile, Louise is shown to have some awkwardness over the fact that David and Adele are far wealthier than her but the fact that they are white doesn't factor into her thinking.
