YMMV / Barney's Great Adventure

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Many reviewers have pointed out the absurdity and squick factor of this line early in the film:
Cody: What's your hurry? They're dumping us for a whole week.
Cody's dad: Aw, come on, Cody, you're gonna have a GREAT time. You can help Grandpa with the farm chores, like, uh... milking the chickens!
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: No prizes for guessing why this film didn't sell tickets at the box office. Parents weren't too keen on paying to go see Barney on the big screen with their kids, when they could just turn the TV on and have the kids watch Barney at home for free. Being released during the growing popularity of "anti-Barney humor" didn't help matters.
  • Awesome Music: The musical numbers are actually pretty well-composed and orchestrated, courtesy of Van Dyke Parks.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: When Cody tries to explain Barney to his grandparents, his grandpa says "He's big now, but you just wait. These fads come and go." By the start of The New '10s, he was right.
  • Love to Hate: Cody. Even though he's a jerkass we're not supposed to like, he gets some of the funniest lines in the movie and his actor is clearly having a ball with his character.
