YMMV / Amphibia S2E36 "True Colors"

Go To

  • Awesome Art: Everyone agrees that the scene where Anne unleashes her inner power to attack Andrias and his robots is one of the best animated sequences in the show.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Many fans theorized that Marcy had chosen the Box as Anne's birthday "present" knowing, or at least theorizing, what it would do. Many fans also guessed that Marcy had no intention of returning to Earth. Both theories prove true.
    • Likewise many fans theorized that Andrias wanted to use the box to colonize other worlds, rather than explore them. The fact that the castle dungeon has all sorts of weird creatures in chains was used to support this theory before this episode aired.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: A number of viewers doubted that Marcy was truly dead, despite her being stabbed through the chest. This is a Disney Channel show, after all. Indeed, creator Matt Braly and Disney ultimately agreed to air the Season 3 opening sequence — which reveals that Marcy is alive and being kept in statis — as The Stinger at the end of this episode's broadcast airing in exchange for the latter not censoring the scene in question.
  • She Really Can Act: If there is something many fans agree about, it's Haley Tju's great voice acting as she manages to capture Marcy's desperate attempts to justify her actions, only to somberly admit that what she did was all in a vain and desperate attempt to not be alone.
  • Signature Scene:
    • The duel between Sasha and Anne, which has high stakes, high emotions, fluid animation and choreography, and demonstrates how far both characters have come.
    • The shocking reveal that Marcy is at fault for the entire series.
    • Anne being granted a Super Mode from her Calamity Gem and fighting Andrias.
    • Andrias stabbing Marcy, a teenage human on a Disney Channel show, all the way through her torso with his sword, pushing the concept of What Do You Mean, It's for Kids? to its absolute limit.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: The reveal of Marcy stranding the trio in Amphibia on purpose was supposed to be seen as something that was just as bad as, if not worse than, Sasha and Grime's earlier betrayal. But unlike Sasha, Marcy did not do this out of spite towards them. She was just terrified of losing the two most important people to her. As she tries to justify her actions to both of them, Sasha is the first to single her out, but Marcy was just as much a victim of Sasha's latest betrayal as Anne was.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: Andrias' speech beginning with "There was a time when Newtopia was truly great" got quite a few fans thinking of Donald Trump's Make America Great Again slogan.
