Epic SMP, sometimes stylized as "EpicSMP", was a shortlived Minecraft survival multiplayer modded roleplay server created by Matt Watson of SuperMega and Trevor ModestCube. Season 1 was first announced to much hype on January 12, 2021, and the server officially just four days later. It is frequently considered to be a Spiritual Successor to SMPLive, despite being largely unaffiliated, due to overlap in server members and general content style.
Epic SMP was largely considered a failure as controversy struck early on and the series fizzled out quickly after it started, officially concluding on April 23, 2021. Despite this, a second season was announced a year later in January 2022, being intended as a complete reboot.
Epic SMP contains examples of:
- The Exile: SwaggerSouls prior to the start of Season 2, being sent into the Void as punishment for altering the balance of the universe, and being denied the opportunity to return to the Overworld, until he manages to convince the Void to give him one more chance.
- Global Ignorance: Cooper, staring directly at the flag of Ireland:Cooper: At the risk of sounding ignorant, is this Italy...?
- In the Dreaming Stage of Grief: After jumping into the Void, Ted convinces himself that the whole thing was just a dream.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: At the start of Season 2, the Void erases all the characters' memories of any wrongdoings Swagger committed during Season 1.
- My God, What Have I Done?: This is SwaggerSouls's thought process after accidentally causing the demise of the entire server.
- Mythology Gag: The Void is a recurring focus in Epic SMP, with Ted Nivison in particular taking an interest in it. This is a holdover from his character on SMPLive, who ran a dedicated cult to the Void and even sacrificed his soul to it at the end of the server.
- Queer Colors: Meowriza, who's a trans woman, carries around a shield with the trans pride flag on it.
- Restart the World: The setup for Season 2 after the total destruction of the Season 1 finale, as a result of SwaggerSouls building a portal into the Void and offsetting the balance of the universe.
- Sequel Hook: Heavily zig-zagged. Epic SMP was largely a failure, and its finale didn't really leave any room for a sequel given the destruction of the entire server and the death of all but one of its characters, but the trailer for Season 2 takes the Downer Ending of Season 1 and gives us the reveal that the world has been completely reset as a result of SwaggerSouls trying to right what he has done wrong in Season 1.
- Survivor Guilt: In the finale of Season 1, SwaggerSouls and jschlatt's greed leads to the complete and total destruction of the server, leaving SwaggerSouls the only survivor. He tries to get his friends back by creating a portal into the Void, which he is punished by the universe for.
- Visible to Believers: It is implied that this is the case for the Void hole, as several players are completely unable to see it, such as Michaelmcchill, who doesn't acknowledge its existence whatsoever. Players who do seem to be aware of the hole are either transfixed by it or skittish and unnerved by it.
