The mod was cancelled twice: one that nearly killed it and one that resulted in its untimely demise. The first misdemeanor was old controversy surrounding Joseph harassing the staff, resulting in a brief cancellation of V2. However, it was revived by Joseph and Mad Man Halloween to continue V2. But it was cancelled for the last time following another misdemeanor, this time, with Mad Man Halloween.
It was briefly revived by Sonic-R Maul with Joseph's permission, only for Error54 to request its cancellation, resulting in the mod being merged with TreyXD's Sonic.EXE mod to form Vs. Sonic.EXE: Mismatched, only for the mod to come back once more, this time, with Maul taking sole leadership of the project.

Vs. Sonic.exe D-Sides contains examples of:
- Ambiguously Evil: While most of the Mightys are Obviously Evil, and Mitee.MPEG and Clover clearly mean no harm, Tenma Mighty's nature is left vague, leaving him to fan interpretation.
- And Now for Someone Completely Different: All versions of the mod primarily have Boyfriend as the player character: however, in Trick Or Flee, you play as D-Sides Grimbo. Additionally, You could have played as Mighty himself in Prey, and as Ray in the d-sides version of Fight or Flight.
- Adaptation Dye-Job: As per usual with remix mods, the characters' color schemes and costumes are changed all over the place. To wit:
- Boyfriend's blue hair is changed to purple (with a darker spot from a botched dye job), he is wearing a tank top, and his clothes are now blue and purple rather than red and blue; the circle backslash symbol on his shirt is changed to a caution sign, and he has a piercing in his left ear. His unused Encore variant has him take on a fox instead of a rabbit.
- Girlfriend goes from a long-haired brunette in a red dress to a pigtailed redhead in a shirt and pants. Similar to her parents, she is now wearing a jacket. Her unused encore variant also has her resemble a pony instead of a sheep.
- Mighty.ZIP, Zeus’ Mighty form, Tenma, Meaty, Grimbo, Aimless (the original version), Dumbfuck and Mitee all have purple shells instead of red ones.
- X-Terion is now an armadillo instead of a hedgehog, as well as having the regular X-Terion's color palate swapped.
- Sonic (which retroactively applies to Beelzevos), Tails and Knuckles (which retroactively applies to ZIP) now become purple with darker quills, brown with blue shoes, and green respectively.
- In addition to this, not only have Sonic and Knuckles have swapped roles, with Sonic being the Master Emerald's guardian and Knuckles being a free-wheeling big brother to Tails, but Knuckles is now named "Claws" since rather than having spiked knuckles, he has extra-sharp claws on his hands & feet.
- Eggman and Maria (which retroactively applies to Soul Maria and Starved Maria) have swapped color pallets, with Eggman also gaining a white and yellow top hat and Maria gaining red glasses and a black dress. Maria takes on Eggman's major role in the franchise while Eggman himself becomes a hermit stranded on the Space Colony ARK.
- Shadow (which retroactively applies to Shadow Hunter) is now a dark red, with lighter red highlights.
- Hyper Claws is now purple with white stripe bands on the ends of his quills instead of a lighter shade of Pink.
- Ray (which retroactively applies to Ray Doll and Soul Ray) and Fang (which retroactively applies to Soul Fang and Chaotix) have switched colors, with Ray becoming a desaturated purple and Fang becoming yellow. Ray also gains red goggles and has green shoes, while Fang now is wearing a purple suit with a yellow tie and a fedora, and his popgun is based on a Thompson rather than a revolver.
- Espio (which retroactively applies to Wechileon and Aimless) is now red instead of Magenta. Additionally, he sports purple shoes with black soles and fronts, as well as a long, long cyan scarf.
- Hare and Labyrinth, the D-Sides versions of Hog and Scorched, are rabbits in this mod, with Hare being Yellow in color, having a gray bow tie and black-white boots. As Labyrinth, Hare is more of a chestburster, as his fur becomes dark gray, his arms and legs (and his gloves and boots) stretch to a ridiculous length, his pupils become extremely dialated, and he has 3 tufts of fur that resemble Sonic's spines. His bow tie also melds into his body as Labyrinth.

Dummied Out: While there are many characters in the mod, there are also scrapped characters, including Beelzevos (No, not that Beelzevos), Soul Shadow, Burninggold, Clover, ZIP and more. - Joke Character: Burninggold & Meaty are meant to be this, given they are the D-Sides equivalents of Coldsteel and Sanic in this mod.
- Stylistic Suck: Personal has a much cruder art style than other songs. Additionally, Meaty's remix of "Too Fest" features horribly-drawn sprites among a PNG background of Denny's.
