Trivia / The Weeknd

  • Approval of God: Neve Campbell approved of his name-drop of her in "Here We Go...Again", although she did admit that she wasn't initially familiar with him.
"How crazy is that? It’s pretty crazy. Well, at first, my publicist told me, and she was like, 'The Weeknd,' and I was like, 'Wait, which weekend? Last weekend?' I had no idea what she was talking about. And then I realized, 'Oh, the guy who played at the Super Bowl! That guy!' Fellow Canadian. How cool."
  • Black Sheep Hit: "Can't Feel My Face", while still being very The Weeknd-like in terms of lyricism (albeit with no swearing or explicit drug or sex references), eschewed the traditional PBR&B sound he had at the time for a more disco/funk approach. It was also his first #1 hit.
  • Creator Breakdown: "Call Out My Name" is rumored to be about his break-up with Selena Gomez. In particular, the line "I almost cut a piece of myself for your life" is believed to be in reference to her kidney transplant. By extension, the entirety of the My Dear Melancholy EP is conjectured to be about Selena.
  • Real-Life Relative: His ex-girlfriend, Bella Hadid, is the protagonist of the "In The Night" video and he initially wanted her to be the cover model for Beauty Behind The Madness, but she declined.
  • Reclusive Artist: Initially. When he first released his demos, he never revealed his face or identity because he was camera shy. He's still uncomfortable with the media spotlight (especially the attention paid to his relationship with Hadid), but has gradually gotten better with coping with the media attention with regards to each song release.
  • What Could Have Been: Drake offered to sign him with Young Money Entertainment in 2012, but he declined.
  • Write What You Know: He was homeless as a teenager and is quite open about his past with drug use. He once described his music as what it feels like to walk the streets at night while high off your face.
