Some plot beats (the arranged marriage, the protagonist's unhappiness in said marriage driving her to an affair with a womanizing new acquaintance, the protagonist's husband fighting a duel he doesn't particularly want to fight but feels pressured into) also bear an interesting resemblance to the German novel Effi Briest.
