Trivia / Star Trek: The Next Generation S3E10 "The Defector"

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Patrick Stewart shows off his Shakespearean chops by playing Michael Williams in Henry V. Given that Picard is the one coaching Data in the performance, it's possible that Picard added himself to the simulation.
  • Deleted Scene: Two scenes were cut for time, one of which was a secondary interrogation scene showing Admiral Alidar Jarok being questioned.
  • Prop Recycling: The Klingon Birds of Prey are significantly larger in this episode than they were in previous episodes, being basically the old props mis-scaled in relation to the Enterprise and the Romulan warbirds. In a later episode, similarly-sized Birds of Prey would be referred to as the K'Vort-class.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • As originally written, the teaser would have returned Data to his Sherlock Holmes role from "Elementary, Dear Data", but then the crew found out that Holmes was still under copyright. With only two days before shooting, Shakespearean actor Patrick Stewart suggested Henry V as a public-domain alternative, and the rest of the episode was quickly rewritten to incorporate its themes.
    • The story, at one point during rewrites, was a love story between Crusher and Jarok.
    • In the script, three Romulan warbirds were supposed to decloak and attack the Enterprise. In the finished episode, only two Romulan ships are involved, giving the Klingon-Federation fleet an even bigger advantage.
  • Working Title: "A Question of Trust".
  • You Look Familiar: Jarok was one of several Star Trek related characters played by James Sloyan. One of his later roles would be as a Klingon.
