Trivia / Sherlock Hound

• Acting for Two: All of the English voice actors acted for two, or in some cases three or four, at various times. Moss and Arquette did this most often in the series, as they respectively voiced Hound and Watson, in addition to the minor/supporting characters they've performed (such as Arquette's Lestrade).
• Dueling Dubs: In 1982, with only the five Miyazaki-directed (and one by Nobuo Tomizawa) episodes completed, one of them (Miyazaki's "A Small Client", aired as episode 3 later on) received a one-off English dubbing, apparently commissioned by TMS (probably as a pilot for a future English release) for which the dubbing studio and voice actors were not credited (indeed, there were no credits at all except production credits for TMS and RAI). This dubbed episode aired on HBO in the U.S. in 1983 under the title The Adventure of Sherlock Hound, making it possibly the first of Miyazaki's directorial works to get a U.S. TV broadcast. It features more realistic British accents than the later dub, and may have been dubbed with actual British talent.
• Fake Brit: With the exception of Hamilton Camp, most of the voice actors portraying the characters are of American origin.
  • A subtle one, but a giveaway to most Brits watching is when Gilmore says 'math' instead of 'maths' in "The Sovereign Gold Coin." Interestingly, he sounds like he is voiced by Hamilton Camp, who is originally English.
  • A more obvious one occurs in "The Bell of Big Ben" even right there in the title. Big Ben is the nickname for the bell, not the clock tower. Though in fairness, many actual Brits don't even know this.
  • This may have been averted with TMS's one-off 1982 dub of what would later be released as episode 3, which features more realistic British accents. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell, as the voice actors were not credited.
• Foreign Dub as Basis: This trope is why the Latin American Spanish dub of Sherlock Hound has the Italian dub theme song even though the dialogue was translated - it was based on the Italian script instead of the original Japanese.
• International Coproduction: The series was a co-production between RAI and Rever Cinematografia in Italy, along with TMS Entertainment in Japan.
• Keep Circulating the Tapes: For the longest time, the one-off English dub of one of the Miyazaki-directed episodes (the would-be 3rd episode called "A Small Client"), which had aired on HBO several times back in November 1983, was notoriously difficult to unearth. As of December 20, 2021, however, the full episode has been found and uploaded to the Internet Archive, and Discotek Media's later Blu-Ray release includes a remaster of this version of the episode.
• Uncredited Role: The voice actors for the earlier 1982 English dub remain unknown to this day.
• What Could Have Been: Concept art depicts a far less kid friendly series more on par with the source, including grave digging and drug use.
