RAI – Radiotelevisione italiana (also stylised as Rai since the new millenium) is an Italian equivalent of The BBC.

Unlike other broadcasters around the world, RAI does not have one, central, news division; instead, it is split into many. These include:

  • TG1: Provides national television newscasts and magazine shows to RAI1.
  • TG2: Provides national television newscasts and magazine shows to RAI2.
  • TG3: Provides national television newscasts and magazine shows to RAI3.
  • TGR: Provides regional newscasts and national magazine shows on radio and on RAI3.
  • RAI News 24 has its own news department.
  • National radio news department was also split per network, but those departments somehow managed to merge again.
  • RAI Sport provides sport news bulletins.
  • RAI Parlamento produces the coverage of parliamentary proceedings on TV and radio.

Its major competitors in commercial sector include Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset.

During The '60s and The '70s it was also involved in film production, having financed many documentaries and indpendent films by the likes of Roberto Rossellini, Bernardo Bertolucci and Luchino Visconti.
