Trivia / Scalebound

  • Executive Meddling: Part of what led to the cancellation was the folks at Microsoft not giving Platinum free rein, disagreeing with a number of their decisions. This, understandably, soured relations between the two companies.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: Shortly after the game was cancelled, Microsoft removed all of its trailers and gameplay footage from their official YouTube channels.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: Rumors occasionally pop up from time-to-time about the project's revival, with one of the more noteworthy instances being in early 2019, when a journalist cryptically stated that Nintendo was reviving a "dead and buried" game during a podcast, with other sources claiming that it was Scalebound. One of the producers noted that this couldn't happen for a number of reasons but this particular rumor would still persist for a while afterwards. Years later, and the person who made the original "dead and buried" statement would confirm that they were actually referring to Metroid Dread, which had seen at least two separate cancellations before development started anew in the late 2010s.
  • Screwed by the Network: Even before they outright cancelled the game, Microsoft reportedly dropped the ball on footage release. The footage unveiled to the public looked rather boring to many people, while private press viewings are said to have elicited highly positive reactions.
  • What Could Have Been: Scalebound was among many game ideas conceived when PlatinumGames was first starting out, with production of the game passed over in favor of creating Bayonetta, though a pitch document was still created. This version of the title was a Wii game starring a young girl who commands a dinosaur companion. Between Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101, Kamiya returned to the concept and decided that the dinosaurs should be swapped out with dragons to make the game more of a fantasy title. In addition, feeling that just standing around and controlling the beast made gameplay too passive, the team swapped out the young female protagonist for an older male with his own combat abilities. Ironically, the original Wii concept would be recycled for a Bayonetta spin-off game (Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon) over a decade later.
