YMMV / Scalebound

  • Common Knowledge: Whenever the topic of why the project was cancelled is brought up, someone will inevitably bring up the claim that Microsoft pulled the plug because they discovered that PlatinumGames was embezzling funds from Scalebound's production to put into the studio's other projects. No Microsoft representative has ever said anything of the sort, and while PlatinumGames reps have admitted that the production's failure was on the studio rather than the publisher, it wasn't because of misappropriated funds. Hideki Kamiya would plainly state in 2021 that the game's cancellation was a result of the studio's inexperience with the Unreal game engine (which Microsoft demanded they use) and creating games with substantial online components.
  • Fan Nickname: Dragon May Cry, Dragon Hunter.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Reactions to public demonstrations of Scalebound were mixed at best, with journalists who saw gameplay footage behind closed doors regarding the game to be a case of this. The game's promotional material up until its cancellation focused on the game's massive scale and co-op features, with said footage getting muted response from gamers. Meanwhile, backdoor showings of the game focused on the title's deeper RPG mechanics and world, showcasing sidequests, dungeons, a dragon customization system, and other things that were more well-received by those who saw them. Even Kamiya himself was annoyed by how the title was presented at Gamescom.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Even in its early footage, the game's world is vibrant and grand. Thuban also has incredibly detailed animations that make him seem almost real.
