Trivia / Mario Party

  • Banned Episode: The game contains mini-games that require players to quickly rotate the control stick, and many players ended up with burns on the palms of their hands as a result. This led to a class action lawsuit that Nintendo lost, forcing them to pay thousands of dollars in damage reparations as a result. This was the reason why the game wasn't included in any system's Virtual Console nor did it have any sort of re-release until the Nintendo Switch Online service 24 years later, as well as why control stick rotating mini-games aren't in any other Mario Party titlesnote  until Island Tour, with The Top 100 additionally bringing back one of the controversial mini-games from the original; however, this is alleviated by the 3DS's Circle Pad being safer. And again in Superstars on the Nintendo Switch, now with a safety warning before the minigame begins.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Wario's line "So ein mist!", which is German for, roughly, "oh shoot!" or "no way!", is often misheard as "D'oh I missed!".
  • Dummied Out: The game has a few unfinished minigames hidden within its code. The only way to access them is by hacking.
  • He Also Did: The composer of this game, Yasunori Mitsuda, also worked on various Squaresoft games such as Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. This game was his first project after going freelance.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The game wasn't released on the Wii's or Wii U's Virtual Console, but the second one was, likely due to the issues with the control stick-rotating mini-games: the mini-games that required players to spin the control stick quickly usually had to be done against AI players that can spin the stick a lot faster than a normal person could. People would try to spin the stick with the palms of their hands, which would cause painful blisters and damage the controller if done too much over a period of time. One of the control stick-rotating mini-games, Tug o' War, has since returned in The Top 100 and Superstars. 24 years later, Nintendo finally re-released this game on the Nintendo Switch Online service.
  • What Could Have Been: The game can detect the 64DD, suggesting that the device was planned to be used in some capacity.
