Trivia / Leviathan (1989)

  • Creator Backlash: Jerry Goldsmith complained that the movie had been better the last time he scored it.
  • Dueling Works: With The Abyss and DeepStar Six, other underwater sci-fi and horror stories. Stan Winston even opted to work on this instead of The Abyss.
  • Referenced by...: One of the machinery sounds used in the film between transitions is sampled in Nine Inch Nails' song "Reptile" from their album The Downward Spiral.
  • Troubled Production: The director made the movie to his vision, and had a shouting match with Stan Winston over the look of the dive suits that the crew compared to watching your parents fight. The hundred-pound dive suits were time-consuming to don, so actors spent whole days stuck in them, unable to even feed themselves at meal breaks; Hector Elizondo brushed with death when he was nearly crushed inside one. During filming of the climax, the creature's prop soaked up so much water that it rusted the rods, making it incredibly heavy and too stiff to really move.
