Trivia / In Space with Markiplier

Go To

  • Descended Creator: Once again Mark acts as a character in-show, also called Mark.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Mark cited The Stanley Parable as an influence on this series. Primarily, the basis of having to navigate a familiar location constantly while suffering a never-ending "Groundhog Day" Loop as the story collapses in on itself.
  • Irony As He Is Cast:
    • Played for Laughs. Everyone finds the Captain "handsome and/or beautiful", including aliens. By contrast, aliens are revolted by Mark. He returns the favor for Bandit, who just looks like her actress Morgan Simone dressed up for Burning Man. The joke is that both are conventionally attractive.
    • Mark's character is the ship's chief engineer and designer. IRL Markiplier dropped out of an engineering course to become a YouTuber. Then again, considering the character's actual engineering skills...
  • Milestone Celebration: Part 1 was released on the tenth anniversary of Mark's first YouTube video.
  • Recycled Set:
    • In Part 2, the hallway in the beginning of the romance route, the crime scene in the horror route, and the room where Mark is seen crying are all the same area dressed in different ways.
    • According to Mark himself, the ship's docking bay was converted into the warp core room. They had to make sure to film all the docking bay scenes first because the changes to the set would be irreversible.
  • Teasing Creator:
    • Users have noted that Mark changed the YouTube Premiere trailer at least four times, once per day, before the actual episode was up, slightly altering some scenes and adding new glitches with ciphers related to Classical Mythology.
    • The Part 2 teaser called "Error" isn't so subtle and shows parts of a math puzzle at various points. It spells out a three-part coded message: "SEVEN GODS ALIGNED, A KEY FORMED FROM THEIR UNION, THE LOCK HIDES IN TIME."
    • All the videos on Mark's channel released between the two parts have allusions to the webseries added in them.
  • Troubled Production: Filming was supposed to start in 2020, but was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The series also went over budget several times, which is why it was ultimately split into two parts; each part was counted as a separate project and thus allocated a full budget.
  • What Could Have Been: Mark and Amy discussed some of the original ideas behind Space here.
    • The series was originally intended to be a single release, but was ultimately split into two parts to allow a much larger budget after it overran.
    • The Universal Stability Agency's headquarters was originally intended to have more of a futuristic "Apple Store" aesthetic, but they couldn't secure a venue that matched what they needed, so they instead used a crusty government office and rewrote the scene to depict the agency as more of an underfunded Vast Bureaucracy.
    • The Film Noir version of Wug's introductory scene originally had Wug's Inner Monologue be in his usual caveman speech. Wug's narration was later changed to be more eloquent to help with the pacing of the scene.
    • Jacksepticeye was originally going to portray Mack, but due to COVID restrictions, he was unable to show up for filming, leaving MatPat to once again take over his role. The character was also going to be three characters — Mick, Mack, and Muck — before being condensed into one.
    • "The Last Goodbye" was originally going to be featured in the story as a music video, but was cut and replaced with "Space Was Cool" because Mark felt it was too upbeat for that place in the story. The song is still in the end credits, and was also inserted into Yancy's cameo scene as a gag.
  • Word of Saint Paul: In a livestream, Lio Tipton said their favored name for Lady is Allu Minium.
  • Working Title: Mark referred to the series as "A Heist with Markiplier 2" before he got comfortable disclosing the concept.
