- Out of Order: Originally, this episode was slated to be the last episode of the season to air, but because NBC was counting on Robin Williams to draw audiences to the show, it became the first episode of the season to air.
- Playing Against Type: Robin Williams, best known for his comic roles, plays the grieving husband.
- Real-Life Relative: Jake Gyllenhaal, son of the episode's director Stephen Gyllenhaal, plays Robin Williams' son.
- Stunt Casting: NBC obviously viewed casting Robin Williams in a lead role as a way to boost ratings for the show, but though Williams had worked with executive producer Barry Levinson on Good Morning, Vietnam and Toys, he insisted he did the show not as a favor to Levinson, but because he was a fan.
- What Could Have Been: Originally, Vaughn and his two friends would have had more screentime together, including a scene where Vaughn and his friends talk about the man who invented Chicken McNuggets. David Simon would later rework that scene into "The Detail", the second episode of The Wire.
