Trivia / Gary Numan

Go To

  • Approval of God: Was happy for the Sugababes and Richard X to sample the synth line from "Are 'Friends' Electric?" in their 2002 hit "Freak Like Me", even going as far as to say he prefers those vocals to his own.
  • Creator Backlash: Gary regrets most of the albums he put out from Warriors through Machine + Soul, the latter of which he considers his nadir, and the poor reception of which almost made him quit the music business.
  • Fan Community Nicknames: Numanoids.
  • One-Hit Wonder: In America, "Cars" was his only hit and is still his best known song there. His success was always centered in his native UK. Still, like Devo, he has a cult following stateside and has influenced many indie, industrial, and alternative artists, including Trent Reznor.
  • What Could Have Been: In 1982, 7-Up were searching for a cutting edge New Wave Musician to promote their product and presumably prove that they were still relevant. They made the unlikely choice of Gary Numan, who agreed to write and perform a new jingle (with lyrics provided by an ad writer). Numan produced three short demos for the ads, but 7-Up ultimately refused to work with him after he failed to show up at a meeting where he was to present his musical contribution... Even though it turned out the reason he couldn't make it was that his plane had to make an emergency crash landing that day.
