Trivia / Debbie Gibson

Go To

  • Creator Killer: Kind of a one-two punch. 1990's Anything Is Possible peaked at #41 and struggled to go gold after two multi-platinum albums, with the gimmick of side A full of dance-pop and side B full of ballads and "mature" material failing to catch on with the public. If that was a bit of a stumble, the Hotter and Sexier Body, Mind, Soul, which was Debbie's attempt at a more sultry, sexy image, was an outright disaster, peaking at a deflating #109, and getting her dropped from Atlantic Records.

    • Bill Hicks loved to pick on her during his stand-up performances and devoted a whole segment to her and other "teen" stars in his 1989 special "Sane Man".
    • She was the subject of the song "Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child" by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper at the height of her fame. She was portrayed by Winona Ryder in the accompanying music video.
  • What Could Have Been: George Michael was a favorite artist of Debbie's, and she desperately wanted to work with him, so she wrote him a letter asking him to produce her song "Foolish Beat." She never heard back from him, so she produced it herself (you can definitely hear echos of "Careless Whisper" in "Foolish Beat"), and soon enough, George missed out on a #1 hit.
