YMMV / Debbie Gibson

Go To

  • Big in Japan: 1990's Anything Is Possible, compared to its two multi-platinum predecessors Out Of The Blue and Electric Youth, limped its way to gold, and only reached #41 on the Billboard charts. In Japan, it's her highest-charting album at #5, and Debbie enjoyed a few more years of success over there.
  • LGBT Fanbase: No surprise since Debbie Gibson played in gay clubs right from her early career. As she told People:
Debbie: I performed at a lesbian club in Brooklyn and loved it so much, I didn’t wanna leave! The girls were so thrilled a new teen artist would play there. I am forever bonded with the LGBTQ community from those early club days!
  • Misaimed Fandom: Debbie once complained in a 2000s interview about how people assumed "Shake Your Love" was a dance, rather than its intended meaning of being unable to shake your crush on someone, and she cringes whenever someone tells her they've been "shaking their love."
  • Narm: 1992's "Shock Your Mama," both song and video. It's Debbie playing catch-up with New Jack Swing, to the point that she raps on this song - even though it comes off more like a shy whisper. A lot of young pop stars go Hotter and Sexier to transition into a more mature image, but that's a really tough sell coming from sweet, wholesome Debbie.
