Trivia / COPS (1989)

Go To

  • Adored by the Network: Since it pulled in decent ratings, had rock-bottom production costs, and has a pretty deep episode library, it became the all-purpose spackle to fill in the holes on Spike TV's schedule. Similarly, WGN acquired rights to air reruns of its early-mid 20s seasons in 2018, and ran several hours of it multiple times a week. G4TV would also air constant reruns in their later years.
  • Channel Hop: It moved from Fox to Spike TV in fall 2013 (though Disney still controls the episodes made before then), then to its successor Paramount Network in 2018, and again to Fox Nation in 2021.
  • Died During Production: Co-creator John Langley died of a heart attack in June 2021 while participating in a road racing event for his COPS Racing Team.
  • Distanced from Current Events: Following the worldwide protests against police brutality resulting from George Floyd's death in 2020, Paramount delayed the premiere of the 33rd season, before ultimately pulling the plug on the show. The show would return to television in October 2021 streaming on Fox Nation and showing reruns on Pluto TV.
  • In Memoriam: Season 35 featured a dedication to co-creator John Langley, who died in 2021.
  • Money, Dear Boy: One of the reason why many people allow their likenesses to appear unblurred is because the producers pay for it, which likely covers the associated court and jail costs.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: "Bad Boys" by Inner Circle. The song was initially recorded and released in 1987, two years before COPS premiered. It was chosen simply because a producer for the show happened to be a fan of the band. However, it wasn't issued as a single in the United States until 1993, where it promptly went to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 because it was the theme song for COPS.

  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: Season 32 was set to premiere in June 2020, but was pulled due to the George Floyd protests. The season would finally begin airing on Fox Nation in 2021.
  • Un-Cancelled: By Spike TV in 2013 immediately after being cancelled by Fox. Then for a second time by Fox in 2021, this time showing on Fox Nation.
