  • Development Gag: Fred Willard playing Pierce in Abed's Happy Place, as he was one of Dan Harmon's original choices to play Pierce when the show was still in its infancy.
  • Reality Subtext:
    • Abed not wanting to graduate is rather bittersweetly reflective of the show's fans reaction to this being (possibly) the last season.
    • The theme of coping with unexpected / unwelcome change also reflects the numerous behind-the-scenes shake-ups that have dogged the show since the middle of the previous season, chief among them the mid-season hiatus and the firing of Dan Harmon as show-runner.
    • Abed's Happy Place is presented as a rather blandly cheery and formulaic sitcom — the same sort of sitcom fans worried that Community itself would turn into in an attempt to become more 'mainstream'.
      • It should be noted that Community being added back to the Thursday schedule also helps to fill a gap left by another NBC sitcom, Up All Night, which, bafflingly, was converting to a multi-camera setup at the time. However, Up All Night ended up getting canceled before the change took effect.
    • In Abed's Happy Place, Pierce is played by Fred Willard. In light of Chevy Chase's vocal disdain for the show and the rumours that he would eventually be leaving (eventually confirmed towards the end of filming the third season), a popular fan suggestion was to replace Pierce with another actor and have no one (except possibly Abed) realize anything was different. Speaking of, Willard was one of Dan Harmon's original choices to play Pierce anyway.
    • Jeff's arranged his schedule so that, with the completion of the history course, this semester will be his last. This works not only as a reference to the possibility of the show ending after this season (as in the first dot-point for this trope), but also a reference that the fourth season is only a half-season in contrast to the previous seasons; where the previous seasons took place over two semesters (at least 22 episodes), this one will only take place over one (13 episodes).
