Trivia / Calvin Harris

Go To

  • All-Star Cast: "18 Months" and "Motion" both feature many Europeans, a couple of Americans, and a few Swedish/Dutch producers, such as Nicky Romero, Ummet Ozcan, Firebeatz, and Alesso.
    • Interestingly, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 seems to invert this, with nearly all of Calvin's collaborators being Americans. The only exceptions are A-Trak, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Jessie Reyez, who are all Canadian.
  • Black Sheep Hit: After releasing Ready For The Weekend, Calvin took to having other artists sing for him instead of singing vocals himself. However, two of his greatest hits, "Feel So Close" and "Summer" are probably his biggest hits that he's ever achieved, despite the fact that he sings them himself.
  • Breakthrough Hit: Calvin was practically unknown in America until "We Found Love" and "Feel So Close" hit the charts. After that, he became the most sought-out artist that people wanted to work with.
    • His track Blame featuring English singer John Newman, was able to propel John to become famous worldwide, who had previously only been known mostly in the UK for 3 singles off of his debut album: "Love Me Again", "Losing Sleep", and "Cheating" (the former getting some minor success in America).
    • Fly Eye Records, Calvin's record label allowed BURNS and R3HAB to become recognized internationally as well.
    • London trio Disciples and singer-songwriter Ina Wroldsen became much more popular after Calvin released a track with them in 2015 called "How Deep Is Your Love".
    • His album "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 is one for Calvin himself, which has him mixing and matching big names in the pop/hip hop music scene and establishes his producing credits.
  • Colbert Bump: Inevitable now that his song "Giant" has been used in the teaser trailer for the HBO Max streaming service.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Anything off of his first two albums that wasn't released as a single is guaranteed to be this.
    • Calvin isn't that fond of his track "Awooga" either, stating it was just a pure club anthem to show the new lifestyle that he has now, and now wants nothing to do with it anymore.
    • His attempt at trying to create a "story" behind his music videos with Acceptable in the 80's...didn't quite turn out well. After the video was released, Calvin mostly lets the music video people do all the work.
  • Creator Couple: His then-girlfriend Taylor Swift wrote the lyric and sung uncreditted background vocals for "This Is What You Came For" while they were still dating. However, because they want to keep their relationship a secret and not take away focus from the song (which he plans to release as a single), Taylor took the pseudonym Nils Sjöberg. This came to a big blow on social media when they broke up and Harris came clean about Swift's involvement.
  • What Could Have Been: Calvin revealed on his Instagram that he was mixing Jessie J's vocals in the studio sometime around 2014/2013, implying that there would be a collaboration between them. As of March 2016, this has not been expanded upon.
    • Early in his career, Lady Gaga of all people asked Calvin if he wanted to work with her. Unfortunately due to Gaga not being quite as popular as she is now, Calvin declined the offer because he wasn't interested, and her name sounded stupid to him.
    • The beginning verse of Under Control was very different from how the final product turned out. Word of God states that Theo Hutchcraft, frontman of the english synthpop/rock duo Hurts was responsible for most of the changes provided.
    • Apparently Calvin wanted Emeli Sande on 18 Months, but couldn't fit her in, due to her being on tour at the time.
