Tear Jerker / Schitt's Creek

Go To

Moments pages are Spoilers Off. You Have Been Warned.

Season One

Honeymoon
  • Moira shares with Jocelyn that she, too, came from a small town. It's a quiet moment. She was one of those desperate weirdos who had to escape a small town. She found her Johnny, she found her soap opera. She happened to stumble into her perfect life with a job that loved her and a man that loved her. How many people ended up trapped in Schitt's Creek?

Season Two

Moira vs Town Council
  • Alexis walks in, broken up over her break up with Mutt. "I let him know me." David spots that she's upset and has a gentle conversation. She admits that she's grown, that this is the first break up she's ever cared about, then asks for a hug. David gives her one and she cries.

Happy Anniversary

  • They are Tears of Joy, but to see the Roses dance together as a family after barely being able to stand each other in the pilot is very poignant. The small smile David cracks at the very end is the first time he looks genuinely happy during the series and possibly in his adult life.

Season Four

RIP Moira Rose
  • Alexis joins David to try and score an exclusivity deal with a new vendor, as a way of distracting her from her feelings for Ted. Things get awkward when the new vendor not only turns out to be Ted's new girlfriend Heather, but she invites them all to stay for lunch and then has Ted join them. Despite the uncomfortable situation, Alexis manages to score David an exclusivity deal for Heather's products, which he seems to not find the right words to thank her for. He does, however, notice that Alexis is in love with Ted, and it's her immediate, matter-of-fact and pained response that breaks your heart.
David: You're in love with him, aren't you?
    Alexis: Yes. Yup.
The Barbecue
  • David and Patrick's fight when Patrick's ex-fiancé, whom David didn't know about, shows up at the motel. David's feelings of betrayal and Patrick's desperation are both very upsetting to watch, as both are struggling to hold back tears.
    • Patrick's speech about why he didn't tell David about Rachel:
"I didn't want it to affect what we have. Okay? And I mean it when I tell you that you have nothing to worry about. 'Cause no matter how hard I tried with her, it just never felt right. And up until recently, I didn't understand why. David, I've spent most of my life not knowing what right was supposed to feel like, and then I met you. And everything changed. You make me feel right."
    • David calls the above quote "the most beautiful thing he's ever heard," but admits that he can't bring himself to forgive Patrick just yet after all the times he's been hurt in the past, and asks Patrick to leave. The worst part is when he calls himself "damaged goods," a sentiment he's implied several times in the show, but never said out loud until now. He's been so abused by his past sex partners (they can't be called lovers) that he doesn't really know how to trust people.
The Rollout
  • Alexis goes to Ted's office to tell him she loves him and wants him to be happy with Heather. She does this after witnessing Ted give an incredibly sweet pep talk to the dogs up for adoption at Single's Week, no less. It's a testament to Annie Murphy's talent that it's completely clear that this is a sincere I Want My Beloved to Be Happy moment rather than some kind of manipulation.
Merry Christmas Johnny Rose
  • Johnny dreaming of the beautiful Christmas parties they used to throw, only to remember later that they always ended with him standing alone by the tree.
  • Moira fixing the party for Johnny.

Season Five

The Hopsies
  • Stevie choking back tears after realizing that Emir doesn't share her feelings while still wanting to be there for Johnny, as Johnny realizes her distress and gives up his chance to schmooze to help his surrogate daughter.

Meet the Parents

  • Patrick's fear over coming out to his parents as a gay man after finding out David has invited them to town for the former's surprise birthday party. Seeing the normally stoic, sarcastic Patrick in such a vulnerable state really tugs at the heartstrings.
  • His words as he expresses his anxieties to David will no doubt hit very close to home for many viewers.
Patrick: David, I know my parents are good people, I just— [exhales as tears brim his eyes] —hmm I can't shake this, this fear that there is a small chance that this could change everything; that they might see me differently, or treat me differently...

The Hike

  • Patrick proposing to David after a comically disastrous hike to a scenic overlook. David immediately bursts into sobs as soon as he pulls the ring box from Patrick's backpack. This is in many ways and for many reasons (beyond the obvious) something David never imagined happening in his entire life, as the concept that he's never felt truly loved has been peppered throughout the whole show.

Life is a Cabaret

  • If you can watch Stevie's emotional performance of "Maybe This Time" with dry eyes, you are stoic indeed.

Season Six

The Presidential Suite
  • Alexis and Ted finally reunite and share a romantic dinner before coming to the realization that although they love one another deeply, the substantial career advancements that have recently developed in each of their lives means there really isn't any feasible way for them to remain together. They cuddle in a booth at the Tropical Cafe for the last time with utterly devastating looks on their faces.

Sunrise, Sunset

  • An understated moment comes when Johnny is faced with a large repair bill for the new motel at the same time he said he would pay for David’s wedding catering as a gift. The quiet pain in his voice as he reflects upon the lavish event they had talked about pre-Schitt’s Creek versus his inability to afford the (relatively) modest affair David is currently planning is absolutely heart wrenching for anyone who’s been unable to give a loved one something they deserved due to money.

Start Spreading the News

  • David and Stevie sit on the hood of her car and stare at the adorable house Patrick had intended to buy for David. She questions him about why he wants to move to New York so badly when all that it has done is hurt his feelings, and he says he has big dreams and friends still there. She informs him that the friends from New York whom he invited to his wedding have decided to attend an EDM music festival in Norway instead. David fights tears and says he wanted to show those people that he wasn't a joke and that he won. Stevie chokes up and points to the house and says he did win. She also tells him she doesn't want him to move away. David later informs his family that he has, in an I Choose to Stay moment, decided to stay in Schitt's Creek.
