  • The whole betrayal by Fernand, who Edmond considered a friend but in reality was a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing. Little wonder Edmond goes after him even after so many years have passed.
  • Just seeing Dantes rot in prison for the first seven years, whipped every "anniversary", and nearly driven to absolute despair. By the time he meets the Priest, he's hardly even the same Edmond Dantes from before. He's been reduced to a broken, frightened, cynical shell of his former self.
  • When Jacopo asks Dantes what he wants to use his newfound wealth for, it's one thing when he names Danglars, Villefort and Fernand. But it's another thing entirely when Mercedes is on that list, on the false assumption that she so happily jumped into Fernand's arms the very moment she learned her former fiancĂ© was dead.
  • Edmond visits his old employer Morrel (who doesn't recognize him) and learns what happened during his imprisonment: Dantes Sr. committed suicide, Villefort became the chief prosecutor after callously condemning an innocent, Danglars cheated Morrel out of his business and Fernand took Mercedes for himself. Edmond can barely contain his shock after hearing all this.
  • Mercedes and her Awful Wedded Life with Fernand. Not fifteen years ago, she vowed she'd never become his "whistle", only for fate to whisk away her beloved Edmond and force her to marry Fernand, but only because she knew wouldn't survive being a penniless single mother whose son was the bastard of an alleged traitor. In the span of fifteen years alone, Fernand has cheated on Mercedes with at least four different women, and he doesn't even put in any effort hiding it when Mercedes confronts him about it. On top of that, Fernand has indirectly hurt his wife by treating their son like a "disappointment". As Mercedes so aptly put it "[Fernand] never pleased [her]".
  • The scene with Edmond and Mercedes in carriage after Albert's anniversary party. You can clearly see that Mercedes is still deeply in love with Edmond and Edmond himself still has feelings for her, but he can't let go of his vengeance (keep in mind he still doesn't know that Albert is his son, so he has no idea about true reason of Mercedes' marriage yet). It's so obvious that it prompts Jacopo to deliver his "protect you from yourself" speech.
  • "Don't rob me of my hate. It's the only thing I have left."
  • Edmond and Fernard's confrontation after 16 years shows that Edmond is still feeling angry and heartbroken that the man who was supposed to be his best friend betrayed him for his own benefit.
Edmond: How did you ever call yourself my friend?
    Fernard: We were friends, Edmond.
    (Edmond slashes him in anger.)
Edmond: YOU SENT ME TO HELL! WHY?!
  • Although it's supposed to be a triumphant moment, Edmond killing Fernand in their duel has a bittersweet tinge when Albert quietly mourns for him. Unfortunately, even though he's learned who's really his biological father, he can't help that Fernand was the only father he ever knew.
