Tear Jerker / Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Go To

  • The game opens with Cal and his crew (disguised as Coruscant Police) flying past what used to be the Jedi Temple, now the new Imperial Palace. While it’s likely Cal already knew about his former home’s fate, seeing it clearly brings out a lot of horror and anger. As Bode later says, the Empire takes what you love and turns it into something you can’t stand to look at.
  • The general condition of Coruscant under the surface level. While it was always a hellhole the further down you go, the game makes it clear that even the levels closer to the top are deteriorating under the Empire.
  • The attack on Jedha and the Hidden Path. After dealing with Dagan Gera and securing the compass to Tanalorr, the Mantis crew and the Hidden Path seem to have finally found a place where they can hide and rebuild the Jedi Order where the Empire can't find them. On a more personal note, the Mantis crew celebrate their reunion after several years apart, and Cal and Merrin finally have their Relationship Upgrade. Things seem to be going well... then the next morning, everything goes to hell.
    • Bode Akuna is revealed to have been an Imperial Spy the entire time, stealing the compass and gunning down Master Cordova in cold blood when he tries to reason with Bode, who then throws down a grenade to cover his escape.
      • BD-1's reaction to Cordova's death is especially heartbreaking, as the poor droid is briefly left staring at his Master's body in silence in shock.
    • Cordova’s last act is to try to reach out to Bode with compassion. He understands that Bode is scared and full of despair, and honestly wants to help him. And he gets a blaster bolt to the chest for his trouble.
    • Cal chases after Bode in anger and shock, leading to a chase scene through the massive Imperial attack against the forces of the Hidden Path. The sheer betrayal in Cal's tone throughout the whole sequence is simply heartwrenching, as the man he regarded as a close friend throughout the entire game so thoroughly destroyed everything they had worked for.
    • The sense of betrayal only grows when Cal finds out that Bode has actually been a Jedi this whole time, leaving Cal unable to comprehend how one of their own could betray them like this. This allows Bode to send Cal off a cliff and leave him knocked out for a period of time.
      Cal: Why? Why, Bode?!
Bode: (Pulls out the compass) For this!
Cal: We fought for that together, and you're just gonna hand it to the Empire?!
Bode: (Puts it away) I'm not giving it to the Empire.
Cal: (Points his lightsaber at him) You killed Master Cordova!
Bode: Cal, you don't have time for this fight. Something terrible is coming for that archive. Listen to your instincts. You know I'm right.
Cal: (Stares at Bode in horror) What have you done?
Bode: If you wanna keep your family safe, you get them out of there. Right now.
Cal: (Takes a step towards Bode) WHAT HAVE YOU—
(But before Cal can do anything else, he is suddenly force pushed backward by Bode.)
Cal: (Shocked and horrified) You can't be!
Bode: (Pulls out Dagan Gera's lightsaber and activates it) You're not the only one who survived.
    • Meanwhile, Cere fights her way through the base to save as many of the Anchorites as she can, and ends up in a confrontation with Darth Vader. Unfortunately, despite an incredible showing, the fight ends the only way it can, with Vader walking away from the fight and leaving Cere to die in Cal's arms.
      • The last thing Cere says before she passes on? "Trilla."
    • When the ashes have settled and the Empire has left, all that remains of the Hidden Path on Jedha is Cal, Merrin, BD-1, and Greez, with the bodies of Cere and Cordova wrapped up in sheets. Meanwhile, all that remained of the combined Jedi knowledge that the Hidden Path had spent several years gathering is a paltry collection of books, mere fragments of the extensive archives the Empire burned.
    • Cal is given the equivalent of a bear-hug by BD, who then sadly trots over to Cordova's body, grieving his old master. Greez is completely and utterly silent, scratching his head and fiddling his hands like he truly cannot comprehend what he's seeing, as he sits down by his old friend's body. Merrin gives Cal a much-needed hug, and then they go kneel down besides Greez and BD, with Cal putting a hand on Greez's shoulder. The way they're huddled around Cere and Cordova's bodies mirrors the final shot of the previous game, but whereas that was a new beginning for their little family, this shot represents how broken their little family has become after the loss of two of them in one fell swoop.
  • After Vader impales Cere, he doesn't say anything, or stick around for her last moments, he just limps away exhausted and wounded by their fight. A small reminder of what Vader is behind his status as The DreadedSomeone who was left just as miserable and broken by the Empire as its many other victims.
  • Merrin's line when Cal is on the verge of slipping into the Darkness by killing ISB Commander Denvik.
Merrin: I know you are in pain, but this is not you! The Empire has taken enough from us! I will not lose you too.
  • After the raid on the Hidden Path base on Jehda, one of the Anchorites remains, the scroll merchant Sister Task. When Cal asks why she’s still there, the previously upbeat merchant sounds shell shocked and full of despair, and can only say “I don’t know,” before resolving to stay and protect what’s left of the archive.
  • Despite their best efforts and desire to end things peacefully, Cal and Merrin have no choice but to kill Bode in front of his daughter, leaving Kata in a similar situation of losing her only family like they both suffered before. To make things more heartbreaking, Kata takes the doll that was the only reminder she had of her mother, and burned it on her father's funeral pyre in the end.
    • Seeing how far Bode had fallen was also hard to watch. Every horrific thing he did throughout the story was to protect his daughter, but during the final fight, he nearly killed her several times when attacking Cal and Merrin, showing how badly his parental instincts had been twisted into something horrible.
    • The effect it has on poor Cal is absolutely heart-wrenching to watch. Despite everything Bode did, making him so angry and full of hatred that Cal has been brushing with the Dark Side, he still tried to reason with him that they could work something out and keep his daughter safe. And when Cal finally does kill Bode, it isn't a triumphant moment or even an act of desperation (Bode's blaster had been damaged and failed to fire). Cal shoots him in cold blood, and he's left with the horrifying feeling that he might not have done it out of a sense of justice for Cere or the Hidden Path, but simply because he was angry enough. His sense of hopelessness is further reinforced later on, when he's staring into Bode's lightsaber and his eyes reflect it's red color, making it look like they've been corrupted by Dark Side degradation.
  • After the story ends, Cal can come across force echo's left by Bode, each providing insight into his actions, and how desperate his situation was, throughout the game. One of which is him singing the Ghost Star lullyby to himself, but tearfully replacing one of the lyrics with his wife's name.
  • Returning to Koboh after the main story ends shows an Imperial Star Destroyer in the sky, and over half the named residents making plans to leave. Having said their goodbyes to Cal, the next time you return you see they've followed through on their plans, and the saloon is almost as empty as at the start of the game.
  • Kata will occasionally sing the lullaby Ghost Star to herself. The song is pretty melancholy by itself, but given how it relates to her parents, and the tragic circumstances that befell them, one can only imagine that the poor girl is either clinging to the tune for comfort, or to express the sadness she's likely feeling after everything that's happened.
