Tear Jerker / Scream 3

Go To

  • Cotton's death. After all the shit he's been through with being framed for Maureen's murder and then having to kill Mrs. Loomis, he finally gets a happy and successful life, only for his girlfriend to be murdered in front of him and then fall victim to Ghostface himself moments later.
  • Sidney's reduced role in the third film helps convey how alone she is; she lives on a remote farm with numerous security systems installed, and works over the phone for a crisis hotline. She's even still wearing Derek's letters as a reminder of that loss. She's also having dreams about her mother as more of the plot develops and more of her mother's past is revealed. Sidney's whole life has been defined by her mother, and she begins to wonder if she ever knew her at all. Worse still, her tough-as-nails persona finally begins to crack because of Ghostface's bullying. She breaks down crying twice, first after her encounter with her mother's "ghost" and again when she's on the phone with Ghostface.
  • Sidney's status at the beginning of this movie is especially sad when you compare it to where she was at the start of Scream 2. In that movie, she's in school, has new friends and a boyfriend, is able to be open about who she is and what happened to her with her classmates, and effortlessly shuts down a prankster trying to frighten her by imitating a Ghostface call. She even takes the movie more or less in stride; she doesn't like it, but she figures it'll be fine once the hype dies down. In short, Sidney seemed to be getting better despite all she went through. Then the events of that movie completely broke her, and caused her to become a recluse who seems to have given up all hope at a semi-normal life.
  • While Tom was a spiteful Jerkass, Angelina (ironically his main target) is heartbroken by his death, tearfully repeating that he was in the house.
  • Angelina was quite a flawed person, but her death is painfully tragic as she's mercilessly stabbed to death while trying to escape from the house, made worse by how terrified she sounds in her final moments before her corpse is dragged away. In general, her story is rather sad, as she's another victim of not only Ghostface, but Milton.
  • Jennifer's death, as she spends her final moments trying in vain to fight off Ghostface only to be brutally stabbed to death. Although obnoxious throughout the movie, Jennifer is built up to be a genuinely helpful and even caring Jerk with a Heart of Gold, and both Gale and Dewey are shown to be utterly horrified by her death.
  • Roman's backstory. His father was a repulsive Casting Couch executive who abused his power to rape Maureen Prescott, and despite the whole incident not being his fault Maureen Prescott coldly rejected him. Even Sidney, who was disgusted by his actions, and put her mother on a pedestal despite knowing she was a serial cheater, can't help but feel some level of sympathy in the end.
