Recap / Xiaolin Showdown In The Flesh

Go To

Frustrated by his slow progress in the Xiaolin, Raimundo joins Wuya, enticed by her offers of luxury and fortune. He steals the Serpent's Tail, which can make people ghostly, and combines with the Reversing Mirror that reverses the effects of Shen Gong Wu to bring Wuya back to physical form.

Tropes

  • The Bad Guy Wins: The monks fail to stop Raimundo and Wuya from using the Serpent's Tail and Reversing Mirror to restore Wuya's physical body, returning her to full power.
  • Cliffhanger: See Downer Ending below.
  • Condescending Compassion: Letting his promotion as apprentice get to his head, Omi declares he'll train Raimundo, who isn't one, night and day... all while saying he will never be as good as Omi, but rather he'll be adequate. This unfortunately becomes one of the factors into Raimundo's betrayal later on.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: From the viewpoint of the rest of the monks, they are shocked that Raimundo was that angry about not getting promoted that he would betray them for Wuya.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Jack is more than happy to rub in the fact that with his new Dectectobot, he no longer needs to put up with Wuya to find Shen Gong Wu after she tossed him aside for Mala Mala Jong in the previous episode.
Jack: "Face it, you old witch. You're obsolete."
  • Downer Ending: The season closes with Wuya returned to physical form... and she's as all-powerful as she was when Dashi first sealed her away.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Downplayed. During the Flashlight Tag showdown, Raimundo remains in his street clothes instead of magically changing into his monk robes. Later, when he's stealing the Serpent's Tail, he wears his hoodie.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: When Master Fung realizes that the Serpent's Tail is all Wuya really needs to regain her power.
Master Fung: On its own, the Serpent's Tail is no real threat: it makes a solid person ghostly.
Dojo: (Picking up what Master Fung is saying) But combined with the Reversing Mirror...
Omi: (Eyes wide) ...it can turn a ghostly person solid.
    Kimiko and Clay: Wuya!
    Master Fung: (Grimly) Precisely.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Raimundo betrays the monks due to not being promoted to apprentice level like the others and Omi rubbing it in to join Wuya, helping her regain her physical form.
  • Foreshadowing: During the showdown, Raimundo dosen't change into his monk robes and stays in his regular clothes instead. This is the first sign he has chosen to betray the other monks and join Wuya.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal:
    • Jack cuts ties with Wuya after she ditched him in the previous episode once she had Mala Mala Jong, refusing to take her back when she comes crawling back. He also shows he no longer needs her because he has created his own Shen Gong Wu detector, which will let him find any activated Shen Gong Wu.
    • Raimundo not getting promoted to apprentice like the rest of the monks in the previous episode was the catalyst to his Start of Darkness, but what ultimately pushes him over the edge into betraying the monks and siding with Wuya is Omi's constant condescension towards him in this episode for not being an apprentice and saying how he will never be as good as the rest of the monks (mainly Omi himself).
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: If Omi haven't been so condescending towards Raimundo during training, he might've not been so tempted on joining Wuya later on.
  • Once an Episode: The "Flashlight Tag" Xiaolin Showdown pitting Raimundo against Jack for the Reversing Mirror, the loser being the first one illuminated by the lighthouse's beam, with Rai's Golden Tiger Claws versus Jack's Lotus Twister; Rai wins after using the Claws to open a small portal and knock Jack off his feet into the path of the light beam.
  • Title Drop:
    Omi: Wuya...?
    Wuya: In the flesh.

Omi and Dojo

During Wuya's revival, the world starts getting hit with spontaneous darkness and decay. The bald Omi proclaims that his hair would be standing on end if he had any, followed by the foot-lacking Dojo saying that he'd be quaking in his boots if he had any.

How well does it match the trope?
