Episode 109: The Other Half

Takes place 12-13 July 2012.

This is a primarily Renegade episode.

Short version

The Renegade fends off (though not without casualties) an attack by the ancient Atlantean archmage Ahri'ahn, who is offended by the existence of the Un-men.

Longer version

The Renegade successfully arranges for Black Manta to be pardoned and paroled by Atlantis, freeing Manta to openly date Queen Clea of Venturia, and meet Kaldur, his natural son. Kaldur and his adoptive father are unhappy about it, but have little choice except to meet with him.

The Renegade later has to respond to an attack at Aberrance by Ahri'ahn, founder of the Atlantean magic tradition, who is disgusted by the very existence of Un-Men. He animates nearby materials into golems that kill a number of staff, patients, and guards, and frees the highly dangerous insectoid Un-men from their secure storage, allowing them to rampage and convert victims into more of themselves. Even Giovanni Zatara is wounded and infected, but Circe and Sunset Shimmer are able to halt and reverse the transformation, and Teth Adom forces Ahri'ahn to retreat, after which he and the Renegade round up the insectoids and return them to storage.

In the aftermath, the Renegade visits the king and queen of Atlantis, who are quite surprised to learn that Ahri'ahn is alive, but willing to co-operate in capturing him.

  • Alternate Universe: Red Lantern Paul visits the Teen Titans after Trigon's defeat, and asks Starfire for advice for why Blackfire is acting strangely. She is able to determine from Red Lantern's description that Blackfire is pregnant.
  • But I Can't Be Pregnant!: Blackfire didn't take Red Lantern Paul seriously when he told her that interspecies pregnancies are possible, so she eventually talked him out of contraception. He was right.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Before leaving Earth for a while, Red Lantern Paul informs Raven that she doesn't have to worry about demon cultists any more, because there aren't any in North America.
Red Lantern: They seem to… Have fallen down some stairs.
    Raven: All of them?
Red Lantern: They were slippery stairs.
  • The Pardon: King Orin isn't happy about issuing one to Black Manta, but since it comes with a geas that will kill Manta if he ever attacks Atlantis again, and since they weren't having any luck catching him themselves, it's a pragmatic trade to remove a national threat.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Neither Red Lantern nor Blackfire were expecting a child, but both are happy to raise one.
  • Switching P.O.V.: This episode features seven POVs, not counting versions of Paul himself (Paragon, Renegade, and Red Lantern), including members of the Justice League, the New Light, and the Renegade's allies and subordinates.
  • The Virus: The insectoids freed by Ahri'ahn run the risk of converting everyone they come across into more of themselves. Giovanni Zatara is infected, but healed before the process is complete.
