Recap / What If The Fantastic Four All Had The Same Power

Go To

We've already seen the reality where the the Fantastic Four gained Spider-Man as a member, the one where they had entirely different powers, and the one where they didn't get powers but remained heroes. Now, it's time to see what would happen if all of them got the power of one.

All Human Torch: The fiery Fantastic Four become superheroes just like in 616 reality, but when fighting Miracle Man, they make a critical error in thinking that a derelict tenement was abandoned, when in reality, a poor single mother and her children live there. They start a fire that kills the children (the mother is working at a nearby cafe), and retire from superhero work in shame. Susan Storm became a nun, Johnny Storm became a racecar driver, and Reed Richards threw himself into his science work. Ben Grimm eventually returned to heroism as the sole Human Torch, becoming an Avenger.

All Mr. Fantastic: Reed Richards is the only one who wants to use his powers as a superhero, as Johnny thinks of it as the key to wealth and fame, while Sue and Ben both think the powers are dumb and freakish, and refuse to use them at all. Sue and Ben get married and never use their stretching powers, Reed absorbs himself in science work (again), and Johnny becomes a famous entertainer called Mr. Fantastic.

All the Thing: Fair warning, this one does not end well. All of the Fantastic Four become monsters, and Ben fights Reed over it. But Susan Storm has it the worst, becoming something like Man-Thing and completely losing her sentience. They are unable to cure themselves, and head to Monster Isle to live the rest of their lives in seclusion.

All Invisible Woman: After that resounding bummer of a short story, let's have a little something nice for the end. The Fantastic Four each get one of the Invisible Woman's powers; Reed can make other things invisible, Ben Grimm creates force fields, Sue has her original power of turning herself invisible, and Johnny can turn intangible (which wasn't one of the Invisible Woman's powers, but whatever). Here, Nick Fury met them after they landed from their disastrous space trip, and they became agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with Sue as the chief dispatch officer, Reed as science division leader, Johnny as head of vehicle maintenance and design, and Ben as a trainer and chief pilot. Dr. Doom demands that Reed give himself up, which he does... but with his invisible teammates sneaking along. Dr. Doom finds out about them when they're in his castle, and a fight breaks out, though Sue escapes to rescue Reed.

The four are able to work together with their powers to defeat Doom, with Reed making Doom's gun invisible to give Ben the opportunity to whack him with a force field, rendering Dr. Doom unconscious. They take Dr. Doom to United Nations grounds, where he can't use Diplomatic Impunity to weasel away, and the Four return to their work.

The end!

What If... the Fantastic Four Were All Tropers?

  • Accidental Murder: The Fiery Fantastic Four accidentally kill two kids when they set a seemingly deserted building on fire during a battle with Miracle Man. Though exonerated of any crime, the guilt causes them to disband.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Human Torch and Mr. Fantastic stories have most of the team retiring, with Reed throwing himself into his work, two team members taking up normal lives (Sue and Johnny in the first, Sue and Ben in the second), and only one continuing to use his powers (Ben as a hero and Johnny as an entertainer).
  • Body Horror: The "All Things" universe, known formally as Earth-9033:
    • Ben Grimm gets his iconic "Thing" form.
    • Johnny Storm, on the other hand, gets the original Thing form, with a body that looks crudely shaped from mud.
    • Reed Richards becomes a purple-skinned ape-man, based on his Counter-Earth duplicate, "The Brute".
    • Susan Storm becomes a vaguely humanoid mass of vegetation, based on Man-Thing.
  • Downer Ending: All The Thing. The team are monsters, Sue's mindless, and they have to live away from civilization for the rest of their lives.
  • Golden Ending: All Invisible Women. The team are together as Shield agents and they beat Dr. Doom, who can't use Diplomatic Impunity to get away easily.
  • Identically Powered Team: The premise, though the team do look different as Things and have variations of the Invisible Woman's powers in the last story. Except for the one where they all have Sue's powers, it doesn't turn out well.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: The opinion of Mr. Fantastic Sue and Ben Grimm.
  • Intangible Man: Johnny's Invisible Woman power. He notes that he could kill Doom by phasing his hand into Doom's body and then unphasing, but refuses because Thou Shalt Not Kill.
  • Lethal Harmless Powers: Discussed, as Johnny notes that he could Tele-Frag Dr. Doom using his intangibility, but he doesn't want to actually kill the guy. Ben also tries to use his force field powers to cut off Doom's air supply, but Doom is Crazy-Prepared and his suit has its own oxygen tanks.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The team of Human Torches is horrified when they get careless and accidentally kill children. This event causes all but Ben to retire, and even he took an extended leave of mourning.
  • Mythology Gag: The different forms of the All Things Four represent Ben Grimm's original and classic forms, the obscure 70s villain "The Brute" (Reed Richards' counterpart from Counter-Earth, originally a Warlock foe, but later he fought the Fantastic Four), and Man-Thing.
  • Series Continuity Error: Minor example- in this issue, Sue thinks her stretching powers are dumb and refuses to use them, but when she got stretching powers in What If the Fantastic Four had Different Powers?, she had no complaint.
  • Some Kind of Force Field: Ben's Invisible Woman power. He tries to use it to cut off Doom's air, but Doom's armor has its own air supply. He later uses it as a bolt of telekinetic force to whack Doom unconscious.
