- A God Am I: Preacher was a former Christian minister who became disillusioned after the apocalypse and now believes that humans are the real gods.
- Backstory: John's is told through flashbacks starting from his first memory post-amnesia.
- Bathos: The destruction of Evelyn is followed by a montage of flashbacks of her providing shelter to young John followed by John learning to drive her and fixing her up set to "My Immortal" by Evanescence. It is played completely straight with the only humor coming from the fact that this is a Lost Love Montage for a car.
- Bondage Is Bad: There are several dominatrixes in the Holy Men.
- Downer Ending: The episode ends with the destruction of Evelyn after a fight with Preacher, followed by a Good-Times Montage of John and Evelyn as John quietly sits in the wreckage to the tune of Evanescence's "My Immortal". It even has Silent Credits.
- For Want Of A Nail: If the Holy Men hadn’t forgotten to take the deceased victim off the cross by the time Preacher finished off John, he would have been killed then.
- Hollywood Atheist: Preacher believes humans are the closest thing to gods there are. Also steals, tortures, kills, does drugs, and practices BDSM.
- Lost Love Montage: After Evelyn's destruction there's a montage of her time with John, dating back to when he was a child.
- Mugged for Disguise: John and Quiet use the masks of two Holy Men they killed to infiltrate their headquarters.
- Now, Let Me Carry You: The flashbacks show John finding Evelyn as a child, full of supplies, and sheltering inside her. Later he takes her to a junkyard and fixes her up.
