Recap / The Scooby Doo Show S 1 E 15 The Ghost Of The Bad Humor Man

Go To

While driving the Mystery Machine, Shaggy skids on a pile of ice cream pops and smashes into the Happy Humor ice cream factory. In search of a phone, the gang enters and finds that the factory is haunted by three phantoms.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Hero: Shaggy and Scooby, attempting to escape from the milk room, land on top of the phantoms, saving Fred, Daphne and Velma (who had been cornered against a wall).
  • Bedsheet Ghost: The ice cream phantoms resemble the classic "bedsheet over the head" ghost, albeit colored cream, brown, and pink in this case rather than the traditional white. Shaggy gets mistaken for the Chocolate one at one point too, just by putting on a brown winter coat.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The ice cream trucks seem to be much heavier than they should be. It turns out that the villain is hijacking and repainting armored cars so he can move the money without being noticed.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Take one guess what colors the Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate Phantoms are.
  • Obfuscating Disability: The ice cream factory owner has a cast and crutches which he doesn't seem to need. He's hiding his money in the cast out of fear the Phantoms will steal it.
  • Stranger Behind the Mask: The Strawberry and Chocolate Phantoms are unnamed henchmen for the main villain (Mr. Grizzly, aka Sammy the Shrimp), who is the Vanilla Phantom.
  • Telepathic Sprinklers: When Shaggy and Scooby are trapped in a storage freezer, they try building a bonfire to warm up. The flames trip one of the fire sprinklers, which causes all the sprinklers in the freezer to activate, and then the water freezes and becomes snow due to the cold temperatures.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: When Fred and the girls are cornered by the Technicolor Phantoms, Fred tells Daphne and Velma to run for it and he'll try to hold them off. Luckily, Shaggy and Scooby burst in and save the day.
