Chen and Bradford respond to a call at the Los Angeles auditions of "American Idol", only to have Chen accidentally take the call and sing. The judges offer a chance to advance but Chen is dragged off before they can do so. Chen is then approached by a sleazy reporter who tries to recruit her for a hooker/robbery sting that ultimately ends up being even bigger. Chen brings in Bradford and the bust is almost ruined by the reporter trying to get a photo.

Harper asks Nolan to come along to her ex-husband's house to investigate her daughter seeing a ghost. Nolan brings his girlfriend and issues come out that neither is prepared to discuss. The ghost turns out to be an old woman trying to avenge her (presumed dead) dog. Nolan gets taken by a kidnapper during a domestic dispute and is rescued by Harper.

  • Abusive Spouse: Donovan's neighbor has kidnapped his husband in order to force him to stay.
  • Casting Gag: Genevieve O'Reilly was the winner of Canadian American Idol. She sings here.
  • Celebrity Star: Ryan Seacrest, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan show up.
  • Dinner and a Show: The dinner with Nolan, Harper, Harper's husband, and Grace is full of awkward conversation topics as well as accusations.
  • Guns Do Not Work That Way: At one point Nolan tries to talk sense into his captor by saying that if he shoots him, that he’ll lose his husband for good. The captor cocks the gun and goes to shoot Nolan but the weapon doesn’t go off, to which the captor remarks that the safety is on. External safeties on handguns prevent the hammer from dropping, which it did, meaning the weapon is either empty or loaded with dummy rounds.
  • Hidden Depths: Chen is revealed to have the same singing ability as her actress.
  • Immoral Journalist: Valerie Castillo quickly proves to be willing to break the law for a story.
  • Minor Crime Reveals Major Plot: Following a missing dog leads Nolan to discover a kidnapping.
  • Paparazzi: Valerie Castillo is more interested in a money shot than stopping a crime.
  • Properly Paranoid: Bradford warns Chen that reporters rarely are not looking for something from the police.
  • Sham Supernatural: The ghost turns out to be an old woman in a white dress with a shotgun.
