Chen has been kidnapped by her date, Caleb Wright, who turns out to be the student of serial killer Rosalind Dyer. Caleb tattoos her with a marking that states today will her day of death, just like his other victims. Caleb proceeds to bury her in the middle of the desert with the intent that will die of exposure. The others attempt to find Chen by tracking down every possible lead, continually stymied by the fact that Caleb Wright used a variety of aliases and stolen identities to protect his location.
Nolan attempts to get information from Rosalind Dyer about her student and eventually plays on her vanity enough that he successfully gets her help. They find and rescue Chen at the last minute. Rosalind finds that due to Caleb taking meticulous notes, they no longer need her help to find any of her remaining victims' remains.
Rosalind dangles another secret about Detective Armstrong to Nolan but he refuses to listen.
- Badass in Distress: Chen is left trapped in an oil drum in the middle of the desert for much of the episode.
- Dark Secret: Rosalind Dyer insists that Armstrong has one of these that she's aware of.
- Death Seeker: Wesley almost kills himself by mixing pills and alcohol. He snaps out of it after seeing what Chen went through.
- The Determinator: A very dark example. Caleb says that his victims agree to be buried alive because the alternative is death in the middle and they all have hope of survival.
- Dragon-in-Chief: Caleb has become this due to his own fame starting to eclipse Rosalind's. This is what drives Rosalind to betray him.
- Foreshadowing: Rosalind begins laying the groundwork for The Reveal later in the season that Armstrong is a dirty cop.
- Glory Seeker: Rosalind turns out to be this as the threat to her face as LA's most notorious serial killer convinces her to turn on Caleb.
- Killed Off for Real: Caleb is killed by Harper, which hurts their chances of finding Chen before she dies.
- Race Against the Clock: Chen has only a few hours before she dies in her present situation.
- Serial Killer: Rosalind and Caleb Wright are both multiple murderers and lunatics.
