Recap / The Pretender S 2 E 13 A Stand Up Guy

Go To

Jarod infiltrates the mob to find a cop killer. Mr. Lyle, who's been on the run since "Past Sim", stages a comeback.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Miss Parker wants to know why Jarod called in.
Jarod: Why is Mr. Lyle tailing me?
  • Cleanup Crew: We see the Centre's "sweepers" in action cleaning up one of the Centre's branch offices after a rogue Centre executive kills everybody there and steals an important file.
Broots: (watching a bodybag being carried out) What happens to them?
Miss Parker: Nothing. They don't exist any more.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Faye can't stand being under Joey's thumb, due to both him constantly pocketing the restaurant's profits and his overall bad attitude. She's eager to get away from all this and, upon learning what Joey has in store for her, is only too happy to participate in Jarod's plan to take him down.
  • Frame-Up: The mobsters found out they had two undercover cops in their midst, so they murdered Lester Knight and framed Dean Clark for it.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: In The Teaser, Jarod, in the role of a gangster, is called on to show his stuff by shooting an inconvenient witness. This kind of thing was a fairly frequent occurrence for Jarod, who would always Take a Third Option by coming up with pragmatic reasons not to do the evil deed just yet — but in this case they're not taking "later" for an answer, and he's forced to shoot the guy. A subsequent scene reveals that the apparent victim was an undercover cop and he and Jarod had arranged matters in advance.
  • Ironic Echo: Joey mentioned that he and his fellows had a bet over what would kill Lester Knight first, saying he lost but that "dead is dead" regardless. During the climax, Jarod is only to happy to indulge in this when taunting Joey before closing the freezer window.
Jarod: It doesn't really matter if you freeze or you suffocate. Like you say, Joey, dead is dead.
  • It's a Long Story: When the mobsters find out Jarod is an undercover agent.
Jarod: Well, the truth is, I'm not really a cop or a mobster. It's sort of complicated.
  • Miranda Rights: A gang lawyer gets his clients out of police custody on the grounds that they weren't read their rights when they were arrested.
  • Never Found the Body: Seemingly averted after Mr. Lyle is shot and falls into a river: Miss Parker sends somebody down to make sure he's really dead, and a body is found. A badly-damaged body that's only identifiable by the clothing and the thumb. Experienced viewers are instantly and rightly suspicious.
  • Noodle Incident: Jarod encountered Mr. Lyle in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, only narrowing managing to escape him.
  • Perma-Stubble: Jarod as a gangster.
  • Perp Sweating: An undercover agent was found out by some mob guys and locked in a freezer. To get the truth and exonerate an innocent man framed for the murder, Jarod ends up trapping the most likely suspects in the same freezer. He messes with the thermostat to force them to fess up. Once he gets the information, he makes it seem like he's going to leave them to die, but he's just messing with them.
  • Staged Shooting: In The Teaser, Jarod, pretending to be a gangster, shoots an inconvenient witness in cold blood — but it turns out that he's actually pretending to be an undercover RICO agent, the guy he shot was another agent, and the 'shooting' was a set-up to establish his bona fides with the mob.
  • A Taste Of His Own Medicine: Jarod lampshades how he thought "it would be really neat" to put the undercover agent's killers through the same predicament of being locked in a freezer and left to die.
  • Understatement: Jarod remarking that his past is complicated.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Joey pleads with Jarod to not be left to die. Jarod has no intention of killing anyone, but that doesn't mean he wants Joey to know that.
  • We Can Rule Together: Mr. Lyle tries it on Miss Parker. It's not clear whether he's sincere or just trying to get under her skin.
  • What's an X Like You Doing in a Y Like This?: Jarod strikes up a conversation with a woman whose restaurant has become a gang hangout, and asks her in a joking tone what a nice girl like her is doing in a place like this.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
    • The mobsters use Faye's restaurant as a front for their business dealings. Once the current counterfeit money scheme is done, though, Joey intends to burn the place down and kill Faye. Jarod, however, ensures this doesn't happen and enlists Faye's help to take Joey down.
    • After Joey confesses and promises to give him anything he wants, Jarod remarks that he just got everything he needs and thus no longer has any use for anyone in the freezer. Jarod's not going to let anyone die, of course, but he's only too happy to let Joey think this while closing the window.
