Tropes

  • Idiot Ball: The rest of the staff, save Oscar, for thinking Angelo Grotti the insurance salesman is in the Mafia. Notably, Michael actually needs a little convincing from them before he believes it, too.
  • Mondegreen Gag: Andy mentions he's afraid of mobsters. Michael replies, "There's no such thing as monsters."
  • Nasty to the Waitress: A variation. One of the things that cements Michael's opinion of Grotti as a mafioso is that he tells the server at a restaurant exactly where he chooses to sit and how he wants his food prepared. It is equal parts "lack of regard for the waitstaff's feelings" and "confidence".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Kevin — staying in Jim's office because it's comfy — gets a call from Jim's credit card company investigating possible identity theft (because Jim is using the card while honeymooning in Puerto Rico). Not realizing the cause, Kevin tries to help the investigation by answering the security questions using information Jim left on his desk. This leads the credit card company to conclude that the person with Jim's card in Puerto Rico is an identity thief and the card should be frozen.
  • Only Sane Man: Oscar is the only one who doesn’t think that Angelo is in the Mafia. He says that with Pam and Jim away and Toby having mentally checked out, “the coalition for reason is extremely weak.”
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Andy wears a mechanic's outfit to justify his bringing a tool in case he has to use it in self-defense. He also wears a hat from Cornell as part of the disguise.
  • Prison Rape: Discussed between Kevin and Oscar.
Kevin: I wouldn't last in jail, Oscar! I'm not like you!
Oscar: What's that supposed to mean?
Kevin: You don't know about jail? You would love jail.
Oscar: Why would I love jail?
Kevin: Because... (long pause) ... You would love it.
  • Shout-Out: Inevitably a couple to The Godfather and The Sopranos.
  • Touché: When the camera crew question Oscar's assessment of him as having mentally checked out, he briefly lets out a light chuckle before depressedly acknowledging it as true.
  • Troll: When Michael calls Jim for help, Jim pretends to give a complete solution to the problem again and again, but with the phone "inconveniently breaking up" when he gets to the most important part. Then he hangs up, with his explanation being garbled, intermittent, and containing the words "Bermuda Triangle",
