Recap / The Odd Couple 1970 S 3 E 8 Felixs First Commercial

Go To

An ad executive offers Felix the chance to direct a TV commercial, with one rather difficult catch — he has to convince Deacon Jones to star. Oscar, a friend of Jones', talks him into it, with the proviso that he also appears in the commercial. With the production dogged by problems, will the commercial ever reach the small screen?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Oscar calls Deacon Jones "Deke".
  • Gentle Giant: Deacon Jones towers over the rest of the cast and easily picks Felix up after the final, successful shoot. However, he's pretty friendly and relaxed, even if he doesn't speak much.
  • History with Celebrity: Oscar and Deacon Jones have a very friendly relationship, which is seemingly the reason that Felix got offered the job. The viewer doesn't receive a lot of information, only that Oscar won Jones' favor for being the only sportswriter never to ask about his parents' height.
  • Money, Dear Boy: In-Universe, Oscar wants to be in the commercial so he'll get paid. He asks about when that will happen multiple times, including when Felix asks him his motivation.
  • Prima Donna Director: Felix spends a lot of time trying to get everything in the commercial just so, and he gets very upset when Oscar (or anyone) sits in his special director's chair.
  • On One Condition:
    • Felix gets offered the director's job, providing he convinces Deacon Jones to appear.
    • Oscar convinces Deacon Jones to star in the commercial, with the condition that Oscar appears as well.
  • Spoonerism: Oscar reverses some of the opening sounds in the commercial from stress.
  • Stage Fright: All the stress and nitpicking ultimately gets to Oscar, leaving him messing up his lines in the middle of final rehearsal. Luckily, Deacon Jones steps in to take over Oscar's lines.
