Recap / The Odd Couple S 3 E 6 Im Dying Of Unger

Go To

While trying to pen a book on the killer instinct in sports, Oscar comes down with writer's block. Determined not to let his friend fail, Felix takes Oscar on a woodland getaway, leading to even more problems.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Animals Hate Him: Felix gets bitten by three animals that we know of — a chipmunk, a rabbit, and a frog — and his bandaged fingers testify to other cases. However, this is only due to his status as the show's Butt-Monkey and not for any lack of innocence on his part. In fact, he's shown to love the animals who attack him, so this could also be considered a subversion of Friend to All Living Things.
  • Awful Wedded Life: When Felix tells his discouraged roommate he's never seen him feeling so low, Oscar snarks that he should have seen him when he got married to Blanche.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Felix hopes Oscar will dedicate the book to him for his help in getting it written...only to find when the book comes out that Oscar dedicated it to Murray for letting him use his cabin.
  • Grave Humor: Felix claims that the Oscar he's familiar with doesn't even know the word can't. Oscar begs to differ and retorts that his gravestone will probably have "couldn't" on it.
  • A Real Man Is a Killer: Lampshaded and inverted. A hungry Oscar tries to shoot a goose, but finds at the last minute he can't bring himself to fire. He calls himself a coward, but Felix responds that violence is easy; Oscar is more of a man for not doing it. This gives Oscar the needed inspiration to finish his book.
  • Writer's Block: The episode begins with Oscar having given up on writing a book. Felix tricks his agent into giving him a few more days, and Oscar ultimately does meet the new deadline.
