It is the year 1532. In the city of Barcelona, A young boy named Esteban, raised by the monks in the Cathedral, runs off to play. Stopping by a tavern in order to listen to the sailors' stories, he catches the attention of a man named Mendoza, who takes an interest in the crescent shaped amulet that he always wears. A number of city officials enter the tavern, offering a reward to anyone who can find Esteban.
It is revealed that the people of Barcelona believe that Esteban is capable of calling forth the sun to shine. Esteban runs off, but is eventually caught and hoisted above the city, something that does not help his fear of heights. But just after the rain stops, Esteban is called back to the cathedral. His caretaker, Father Rodruigez, is dying. On his deathbed, Father Rodruigez reveals Esteban's origins - he was found on a sinking ship by Magellan's fleet, and was rescued by a nameless sailor. Urging Esteban to use his powers for good in the New World, Father Rodruigez passes away.
Mendoza reappears, revealing himself to be the nameless sailor who saved Esteban. As proof, he shows Esteban the missing half of his medallion, taken when he was a baby. Mendoza claims that he can get Esteban on board of a ship that is about to depart for the new world. Once aboard, Esteban makes the acquaintance of an Incan girl named Zia...
