Recap / The Lion Guard S 1 E 18 Janjas New Crew

Go To

Summary: Janja assigns two new hyenas in an attempt to sideline the Lion Guard.

This episode gives examples of:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Janja, Cheeezi, and Chungu, to the point that the Guard could arguably be seen as Hero Antagonists.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Chungu and Cheezi consider Janja their family. And he cares about them too.
  • Backstab Backfire: Janja throws Cheezi and Chungu out, and he gets betrayed by the very two hyenas he promoted when they try to kill him when throwing him off a cliff, and then he throws them under the bus by spilling the beans to the Guard.
  • Boring, but Practical: Nne and Tano manage to create a brilliant plan that while boring, clearly is a lot more successful than any of Janja's plans, and it came the closest to succeeding. If Janja hadn't tipped off the guard, it would have.
  • Enemy Mine: Janja happily throws Nne and Tano under the bus after they try to get rid of him.
  • Darker and Edgier: A lot more darker than most of the other episodes and is right there with "Can't Wait To Be Queen" as probably the most serious of the season, as Nne and Tano almost kill Janja and put a plan that was stopped just at the last second.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Janja's initial plan involves chasing wildebeest, in the belief that all the mud in the area will keep their prey from escaping. But he never considers that his clan might slip in the mud too.
  • Evil Is Petty: Nne and Tano try to kill Janja just because they consider him incompetent and a liability.
  • Hollywood Tactics: Inverted. Nne and Tano use a diversion to draw the Guard away, and while they are distracted, go after their main target.
  • Idiot Ball: Even though they have encountered Cheezi and Chungu multiple times, (if the dialogue in "Can't Wait To Be Queen" is any indication) the Guard have absolutely no idea that it is them until they shake the mud off.
    • Even worse is how easy they fall for Nne and Tano's ruse. Instead of having Ono swoop through the skies and search for them, the Guard immediately thinks it is Cheezi and Chungu, even though they saw nobody chasing them.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Nne and Tano are played a lot more seriously than any of the other hyenas. They put a brilliant plan into action, try to kill Janja because they don't like him, and they almost manage to kill the oryxes.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Nne and Tano.
  • Meaningful Name: Nne and Tano mean "fourth" and "fifth" respectively. Fitting since Janja is considered the alpha hyena, with Cheezi and Chungu being his #2 and #3.
  • Mythology Gag: The shot where Janja gets knocked off of the cliff by Nne resembles Mufasa getting thrown to his death by Scar. In this instance, something actually broke Janja's fall.
  • Never My Fault: Janja blames Cheezi and Chungu for the failure of his plan to attack the wildebeest, despite the fact that he was the one who slipped in the mud and slid right into the Lion Guard.
  • No Song for the Wicked: While most episodes in which Janja features prominently usually have a song, Nne and Tano do not sing to show their more serious nature.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Both Nne and Tano, who are possibly the most villainous hyenas since the original trio from the first movie, and the most intelligent in the franchise (considering how well-thought-out their plan was and how they willingly betrayed Janja without a second thought, they're pretty much the hyena equivalents of Scar).
  • Save the Villain: Subverted. The Guard had no idea that it was Cheezi and Chungu, but they probably would have saved them anyway.
  • Tempting Fate: Nne and Tano mockingly ask Kion if he'll use the roar to stop them. He does just that.
  • Villain Ball: Nne and Tano commit two big errors. The first one is that they didn't make certain that Janja was dead, since they just tried to kill him, and the second is that they did not run despite knowing what the Roar could do.
  • Villain Song: Subverted. Cheezi and Chungu start singing about how they miss Janja...only to stop singing at the start when they spot antelope for lunch.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: When Kion uses the Roar on Nne and Tano, we don't ever see them reunite with Janja. It's possible that, as is usually the case, they were knocked back into the Outlands.
