Recap / The Inbetweeners S 2 E 1 The Field Trip

Go To

It's time for the infamous sociology and geography field trip to Swanage. New girl, Lauren, has joined the school and Will has taken a particular shine to her. The only problem is that she has eyes for Simon.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Beach Episode: Or rather the waterfront, which is as close as the cheap school gets. And, unusually for this trope, it's set in the winter, which ends up going very badly for Simon.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: Jay goes off looking for a fictional "sexy housewife" who apparently gives out blowjobs to sixth form students. He allegedly heard about her from his friend in year 13, and the way he actively searches for her leads us to believe that it's not his own brand of bullshit, and that he did indeed hear it from somewhere. However it can also be interpreted as Jay merely trying to back up his claim of a real sexy housewife by pretending to search for one.
  • Cannot Tell a Joke: Will's random "FEISTY ONE YOU ARE!" Yoda impression elicits awkwardly blank faces from Lauren and Simon as they ponder whether he's some sort of madman.
  • Cringe Comedy: Will cockblocking Simon with Lauren. Comes to a culmination when, after making it very explicit that the two of them wanted time alone together, Will continues to stand there and attempt to get Simon to leave with him even as Simon and Lauren are in the midst of a romantic hug.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Jealous of Neil impressing the classmates by getting a lorry driver to honk the horn, Jay tries to one-up him. His method? Waving sweetly at a minibus full of old ladies before showing them rude hand gestures. Neil is the only one who laughs. Everyone else is visibly unamused.
  • Fan Disservice: Simon gets naked as a result of falling out of the boat fully-clothed and having to strip in order to avoid hypothermia.
  • Foreshadowing: Jay's name for Will on the coach trip is Sponegbob shit-his-pants". In the season finale, Will shits himself during one of his exams.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Nice Girl or not, Lauren repeatedly inquiring about Will having mental problems despite his obvious attempts to halt the line of inquiry is not flattering behaviour.
  • Mercy Kill: After the lads accidentally catch a fish, Neil says that it'll never survive if they put it back in the water and that the kindest thing to do is kill it. Neil's solution? Punching it to death.
Will: Well, that was a much more dignified end for him.
  • Naked People Are Funny: A lot of Simon's classmates think his predicament is hilarious.
  • Rule of Pool: Clearly, this trope also applies to a boat trip in Swanage Harbour; as soon as the boys get on the boat, you just know that someone's going to fall into the water.
  • Smug Snake: Simon brazenly thinks there's no chance Lauren will go for Will instead of him but as it turns out, his own obsession with Carli causes him to miss out on hooking up with her.
