Go To

A Plot: Adam and his current girlfriend Carmen talk about their "adult" relationship.

B Plot: An old friend of Erica's is back in town, and Geoff thinks that Barry's going to do something weirder than usual in response.

  • Call-Back: The first thing Beverly asks when she learns that Adam's preparing for his one-month dating anniversary with Carmen is if he plans to do the Say Anything... boombox scene yet again, as he had done in past episodes.
  • Commonality Connection: Barry and Bill Lewis end up connecting over a shared love of watching sports while admitting they have little else in common, which Erica attributes to how they both also lost their main sports-watching partner Murray.
  • Commuting on a Bus: Lainey Lewis visits from L.A., instigating the B Plot.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Adam, who is explicitly referred to in this episode as "master of the Grand Gesture", was going to have one with Carmen, showing up at the '50s diner with a bouquet and a mixtape, right when he learns that Carmen didn't think they had a serious relationship and dated someone else just a day ago. He later tries to perform a "Grand Casual Gesture" with the non-romantic "Wheels on the Bus" playing on the Say Anything... boombox to express his acceptance of her "casual" dating style, but is unable to go through with it and confesses that he can't help but desire a serious relationship with her. Carmen ends up returning the gesture on the Goldbergs lawn, admitting she wasn't ready to be hurt again after a previous failed relationship but is now willing to give another serious relationship a try with Adam.
  • Imagine Spot: In the opening, Adam compares spending time with Carmen to a radical dance number. The scene transitions to Adam disco dancing with Carmen, then cuts back to Adam dancing with a mop when Johnny Atkins snaps him out of his daydream.
  • It's All About Me: Right before they catch Carmen on a casual date with someone other than Adam, Beverly is complaining to Kinsey about Adam's love life, while Kinsey is upset because she had originally asked Beverly to lunch to disclose a personal health issue that Beverly doesn't care about. Later, Beverly confesses to Adam that she wishes she was the target of one of his Grand Romantic Gestures instead of his girlfriends.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Geoff is convinced that Barry is going to make a move on Lainey while she's in town despite still being in a relationship with Joanne. Eventually, Erica, Geoff, and Joanne all go to the Lewis household to confront Barry, only for them and Lainey to all discover that Barry's actually hanging out with Bill Lewis, which Bill and Barry treat similarly to a secret tryst until the girls say there's nothing to be ashamed of.
  • Offscreen Breakup: While Erica's trying to prod information out of Lainey to confirm if she's hooking up with Barry while in town, she learns that Lainey and Steve (from "The Steve Weekend") had recently broken up.
  • Plot-Inciting Infidelity: Early into the A Plot, Beverly spots Carmen on a date with someone other than Adam, who in turn discovers that Carmen thought their relationship was "casual" while Adam himself was preparing a Grand Romantic Gesture for their one-month dating anniversary.
  • Starting a New Life: After trying to help Adam with relationship advice and realizing how undesirable he is to most women due to his mediocre job, still living with his mother, and various other reasons, Beverly asks if he's considered moving to the Dominican Republic and starting fresh.
