After being forced to attend Ashley's violin practice, Will tries to teach her the drums instead.
This episode provides examples of the following tropes:
- Bait-and-Switch: While Will is chaperoning Ashley at her violin lesson, horror movie music plays as the hands on the clock move in 20 minute intervals. This leads us to believe Will had a miserable time, he actually enjoyed it, the music was just what they were learning to play.
- Ceiling Banger: The Banks become unable to sit peacefully in the living room after Ashley gets her drum kit.
- Getting the Boot: Philip quite literally throws Jazz out the door after scratching a classical record. This scene becomes a Running Gag throughout the series.
- Grumpy Old Man: Philip acts like this toward Ashley throughout the episode, and is later joined by Will, thanks mainly to being Vicariously Ambitious. Will blames television for Ashley's attitude.
- Really Gets Around: Played for Laughs with Ashley's violin teacher, Madame Chatchka, who has plenty of experience with several orchestral composers.
- Schedule Fanatic: Downplayed with the Banks. Ashley only has one assigned activity a day, but the family is pretty strict that she follows her calendar.
- Take a Third Option: When given the choice between playing the violin or drums, Ashley ends up choosing neither, as she does not care for either instrument.
- Vicariously Ambitious: Philip wants Ashley to learn the violin because he never had that opportunity as a child, not because she was interested in playing. Will unexpectedly acts the same way when Ashley reveals she doesn't want to learn the drums, either.
- Subverted with Vivian, who is fine with Ashley quitting whatever she wants...except ballet, which is of course what Ashley picks.
