Recap / The Cuphead Show S 3 E 8 Down And Out

Go To

One minute you're up, the next minute you're down. King Dice has fallen from top of the heap to rock bottom ever since getting canned by Old Scratch. His theatre and show got shut down, he's no longer the Devil's #1, and he's got nothing left. Now if the king wants to get back on top, he has to roll the dice and trust the Cup Brothers of all people as his managers.

Tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Once again, Cuphead foils King Dice's attempt to get his soul without realizing it.
  • Brick Joke: Cuphead and Mugman don't start out too hot when trying their ventriloquist act. Near the end of the episode, when they help King Dice become popular again, they make use of the hype so their act gains more attention.
  • Call-Back: Stickler brings up The Devil accidentally killing the first and second finest demons in "Release the Demons!", as well as the third finest demons getting killed in an attempt to get Cuphead's soul.
  • The Cameo: Sally Stageplay and her husband, as well as Bowlboy, can be seen in the club.
  • Eating Shoes: King Dice has been reduced to eating his own shoe for breakfast.
  • Makeover Montage: Upon agreeing to help Dice out, Cuphead and Mugman drag him back to the cottage and, with some help from Elder Kettle, clean up him so that he looks like his old self again.
  • Mythology Gag: The fake contract, said to finalize Cuphead being King Dice's manager, is revealed to be a Soul Contract, which surrenders the signer's soul to the Devil. The original video game has the player collect these contracts from defeated bosses. As a Rewatch Bonus, if one sees this episode after "The Devil and Ms. Chalice", it's implied that the Devil will use Dice's musical prowess and his own trickery to goad the inhabitants of the show (The Root Pack, Ribby and Croaks, Hilda Berg, Baroness von Bon Bon, Grim Matchstick, Captain Brineybeard, Cala Maria, Werner Werman, and Sally Stageplay) into signing their Soul Contracts along with the others included in the game only, thus setting up the plot of the game.
  • Riches to Rags: Ever since the Halloween maze fiasco, King Dice has pretty much lost everything and is forced to eat his own shoe for food. Apparently Henchman's temporary role as host in "Roll the Dice" had failed earlier, causing the radio show to be canceled.
  • Spanner in the Works: King Dice's plan to have Cuphead sign his soul away is ruined the moment he tears up the contract. The reason? Music is So Last Season, and comedy is in!
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After seeing King Dice failing to have Cuphead sign a fake contract, he prepares to leave with his night soured. The Devil then decides to forgive Dice for his past failures and make him his "Number One" again, if only to add lost pizazz to the mundane Underworld.
  • Troll: Mugman’s ventriloquist dummy constantly makes jokes at other people’s expense, mostly Mugman himself.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: How does King Dice thank Cuphead for sticking by his side and helping restore his fame and fortune? Why, try and sell him out to The Devil of course!
    • Humorously, Cuphead isn't much better. How does he thank King Dice for rocketing him and his club to prominence? Replace him with Mugman and his ventriloquist dummy because "music's out, comedy's in."
