Recap / The Cuphead Show S 3 E 4 Roadkill

Go To

It has been months since any souls have been collected. Normally the Devil would not care but since there are "bubbles of failure" threatening to entomb all his possessions (and Henchman), what else can Old Scratch do? One painfully exhausting walk upstairs later and Old Scratch is run over by Elder Kettle. Only the porcelain pops thinks he's a stray cat. Hilarity Ensues.

Tropes included:

  • Absurdly Long Stairway: Unable to use the elevator due to it being bubbled, the Devil is forced to exit the Underworld this way.
  • Becoming the Mask: The Devil takes advantage of being mistaken for a housecat by Elder Kettle, in order to ambush Cuphead. However, he slowly gets too into character before he comes to his senses.
  • Brick Joke: Cuphead mentions there's a double double feature at the Inkwell Theater in order to get Elder Kettle off his and Mugman's backs so they can go to the movies in peace. Later, Ms. Chalice tells them that there's a double double feature playing at the Inkwell Theater, with the last person there buying the popcorn.
Cuphead: Well, whaddya know? I guess our lie came true.
  • The Cameo: Ms. Chalice shows up to inform the Cups that a double double feature is playing at the Inkwell Theater.
  • Call-Back: Back in "Sweater Luck Next Time", when Cuphead tried to hide the Devil away from Elder Kettle, he told him that it was just a "large cat man". Cut to this episode and the Devil pretends to be just that toward Elder Kettle in order to ambush Cuphead and get his soul.
    • Stickler still has his invisible sweater on, a callback to "Sweater Off Dead", "Sweater Luck Next Time", and "Release the Demons!"
  • Celestial Deadline: In order to regain his possessions, the Devil has a whole day to recollect a single soul or else he will be permanently deprived of them.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Evil as he is, the Devil can't resort to taking Elder Kettle's soul after he took care of him.
  • Floating in a Bubble: Henchman is trapped in a bubble due to being considered one of the Devil's most prized possessions.
  • Humiliation Conga: Let's count them off. His possessions, including both the hellevator and his pitchfork, are bubbled 'cause he hasn't collected a single soul in months. He's forced to walk all the way up to the surface. He steps on a pinecone, falls off a cliff into thornbushes, gets his nose chomped by a bunny, and finally gets run over by Elder Kettle. And this is all before he gets treated less like the ultimate evil and more like a house cat.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In the end, the Devil decides not to get Cuphead, Mugman, or Kettle's soul, instead deciding to get Telephone's soul in order to retain his belongings.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: In-Universe. Stickler reminds the Devil that he was the one who enforced the idea of having Bubbles of Failure recollecting his possessions in order to encourage soul collection when he complains about losing them.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: The Devil is determined to get Cuphead's soul, but Stickler says that any one soul will suffice to turn off the Bubbles of Failure. By the end, he decides to take Telephone's soul. Again.
