Chapter 7: By the Light of the Stars

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In canon, Malphas only appeared in the Season Two episode "Through the Looking Glass Ruins". Here he apears despite the chapter being set during the events of the Season One episode "Lost in Language".
  • Entertainingly Wrong: According to Luz, the only non-fiction book in the Bonesborough Library with any information on angels and humans — Taxonomy of Exotic Peoples from Beyond the Realm — is hilariously wrong about a number of details. According to one of the librarians, every other book on angels, both good and bad, were confiscated and kept by Belos.
Luz: I don't think the writer had even met an angel or human!
  • Oblivious to Love: Luz seems to think the constant Crush Blush Amity has around her means that she always makes her mad, much to Emira and Edric's amusement.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: Eda claims that the Bat Queen's brood are a type of bat demon that inspired vampire myths in the Human Realm.
  • Pacified Adaptation: In "Lost in Language", Luz and Amity's relationship was still mostly antagonistic, the main threat being Otabin, having been altered into a monster due to edits made to his book. Here, the main threat is Malphas, a high-ranking demon who doesn't have to be fought, but rather convinced that Amity wasn't involved in Luz, Emira and Edric's scheme. While Otabin's book was altered, it was only in a manner of behavior, at first given the ability to find certain books, then as a Living Lie Detector. The result leads to the events playing out a lot less action-packed than in canon.
  • Point of Divergence: Unlike in canon, Luz doesn't do the Moonlight Conjuring in secret, agreeing with Eda's logic that applying her angelic magic to it would be a bad idea.
  • Secret-Keeper: The Bat Queen recognizes Luz as an angel on-sight.
  • Seven Heavenly Virtues: It's here that Luz tells Amity that the Divine Realm is divided into a Fantastic Caste System in the form of "Crests", each ruled over by a Seraphim; Crest Kindness (the crest Camilla and Luz belong to) are medical professionals, Crest Chastity rear children, Crest Charity runs the economy, Crest Diligence are law enforcement and the military, Crest Temperance are food production, Crest Patience are the courts and Crest Humility are administrators and organizers. Amity can't help but compare it to the Coven System on the Boiling Isles.
  • Tribe of Priests: According to one of the older librarians, angels were a taboo subject on the Boiling Isles until Belos came along and claimed that angels act on behalf of the Titan, turning angels from bogeymen used to frighten children in fairy tales to Always Lawful Good beings worthy of reverence.
