Sam and Dean are asked to investigate the murder of a childhood friend, calling them back to a motel from their past and perplexing them with a case they thought was solved a long time ago.

Tropes

  • Big "SHUT UP!": Already angry at Dean for not telling him immediately about Jack's suicidal spell, Sam just cuts off the conversation with "Stop!", before telling him to "just drive".
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Dean's struggle to tell Sam about the trial Jack will undergo is a big plot point in the episode.
  • Central Theme: Keeping secrets. Caitlin lies to Sam and Dean about Travis's funeral so they will visit, because it's the only way for them to retake the case again. Dean didn't tell the others about the bodies in the Baba Yaga's nest, because he was traumatized for life. Finally, Dean keeps Sam from knowing about Jack's impending death until a discussion at the end of the episode, because he thought Sam could not handle the ethical implications of it, after what they had planned for Amara.
  • Child Eater: The Baba Yaga prefers to feed on children, but it admits it's willing to make an exception for the grown-up heroes.
  • Dramatic Irony: After Dean admits what he saw in the Baba Yaga's nest years ago, Sam is understanding, saying that they were kids then, and they no longer keep secrets now. But Dean is keeping a secret, which he only spills out at the end.
  • Driven to Suicide: Part of Baba Yaga's power. Travis technically killed himself. And Dean points a knife at his own abdomen after his first adult meeting with the Baba Yaga.
  • The Ghost: Despite being mentioned a few times, John is absent in the flashbacks.
  • Last of His Kind: Chuck is done destroying the other universes (including, presumably, the Apocalypse World), making the current universe the only surviving one.
  • Put on a Bus: Billie says that because she is not part of Chuck's death book, she will not have any further role in the story until the end.
  • Soul Jar: The Baba Yaga's ring serves both as the source of its power, and keeps it alive when it is seemingly destroyed after the ring is removed. Destroying it for good requires destroying the ring.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When Dean tells Sam the truth about the sacrificial spell Jack will do, he is understandably livid that he kept something this important from him for so long.
