Go To

When an outspoken Middle Eastern activist is abducted while she was speaking at a human rights symposium in L.A., 20 Squad are in a race against time to find her before she comes to harm. At the same time, Hondo tries to reconcile his father and his older sister, Luca's plans for the food truck hits a snag and Street and Molly get closer.

Tropes

  • The Alleged Car: The truck that Luca plans to use for his Guatemalan food business. Street is rather grim-faced to learn Luca got it from a police auction and that its previous owners used it to cook crystal meth, and his cook flatly refuses to use it after Tan mentions someone was shot in it until Luca gets a priest to exorcise the truck.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Amina's aunt and uncle initially appear concerned about their niece's safety, but it turns out they orchestrated her kidnapping with the intention of handing her over to the authorities in their homeland to regain the prestige they lost due to her outspokenness.
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: After Street agrees to go on a date with Molly Hicks, he gets a call from her dad Commander Hicks assigning him to armoury duty all night, leaving him to wonder if this is in effect.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Chris mentions that Amina apparently escaped jail with the help of a sympathetic prison guard who disguised her in one of their uniforms.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Amina mentions at the beginning she was imprisoned with five friends for protesting against their homeland's human rights abuses, and that said five friends are still incarcerated. At the end of the episode, the media furore from her kidnapping draws attention to her friends' detention, and the resultant international backlash forces their release.
  • Enormous Engagement Ring: Amina's fiancee is dismissed as a suspect in her kidnapping when Lynch mentions he's "spent four months' salary on a diamond engagement ring".
  • Expy: Amina seems to take a lot of inspiration from Malala Yousafzai.
  • I Warned You: After Hicks assigns Street to armoury duty, Deacon and Tan both make jokes about how they warned Street dating the boss's daughter was a bad idea.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Invoked by Hondo, who explains to Winnie their father is about to go in for life-threatening surgery, so she may not get another chance to say all the things she's bottled up to him.
  • Pet the Dog: Chris takes Street's armoury assignment so he can go on his date with Molly.
  • Put on a Bus: Hondo mentions that Commander Hicks is away at a policing conference in Chicago.
  • Qurac: Amina's country of origin is never identified.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Unlike Hondo, his elder sister Winnie holds a lot of anger over their father walking out on their family when they were kids.
