Recap / Runaways (2017) S02E05: "Rock Bottom"

Go To

When the kids discover that Topher may be more dangerous than they could have imagined, addicted to the rocks that give him superhuman abilities, will they help him or will they turn their backs on their new friend?

  • Addled Addict: Contrary to his claims, Topher is extremely addicted to the alien rocks, to the point where he murders a guard on the dig site over it.
  • The Ageless: Turns out that the night that Molly's parents died, Topher was there on guard duty, and the alien rocks he found after the explosion apparently halted his aging process.
  • And This Is for...: When Robert attacks Jonah, he says that this is for his daughter Amy.
  • Attention Whore: Turns out the favor Chase had to give Eiffel back was a selfie with her, which turned her into an internet celebrity over night.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Not exactly heroic versions this time, as Jonah is rescued by the Frances and Aura of the Church of Gibborim, just when Robert is about to possibly finish him off.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Gert, to the point where Alex uses two seatbelts just to be safe.
  • Internal Reveal: After Robert unsuccesfully attacks Jonah, the latter returns his unconscious body to the rest of the PRIDE, now seemingly fully aware of their scheming against him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Topher hurls a big container at the Runaways, Chase blasts it away with his Fistigons and it nearly lands on the car with Gert inside. Topher is horrified at the sight and pushes the car away, getting squashed by the container himself in the process.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Molly accuses Nico of being just like her mother after she proclaims that only the people close to her matter to her.
  • The Reveal: At the bottom of the dig site, there is an ancient space ship, with Jonah's true family on board. And it landed there millions of years ago.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Even after Topher nearly killed Gert, the Runaways (to differing degrees) are able to feel sorry for him, as he was an addict who lost control above everything else. Though Molly called them out, especially Nico, for disliking and distrusting him from the start.
  • Unreliable Expositor: Topher's version of why his family kicked him out is later shown to be wrong, as they kicked him out after he accidentally put his father in a wheelchair.
