It's Summertime luh-uh-loving. It's loving in the Summertime.

Written by Sean Szeles

While cleaning the gutters of the house, Mordecai and Rigby comes across an old cassette tape of a song ("Summertime Loving, Loving in the Summer (Time)") that they used to like. They decide to listen to it but they quickly disliked it after hearing it. For the rest of the day, Rigby starts singing the song without realizing it which annoys Mordecai. Mordecai decides to help Rigby try to get the song out of his head.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Benson first arrives to help Mordecai and Rigby, it seems like he's going to berate them for playing their music. That is, until Benson reveals his drumset.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Benson near the end.
  • Big "NO!": All of the park crew's reaction to Rigby's new obsession with their own song "Aw, Snap!".
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Summertime Loving, Loving In the Summer (Time).
  • Ear Worm: "Summertime Loving, Loving in the Summer (Time)" ends up distracting Rigby, who can't stop singing it even after playing it the first time. When the Ear Worm manifests into a walking, dancing cassette tape, the gang makes a new song "Aw, Snap!" to destroy it.
  • Here We Go Again!: After finally destroying the Summertime Song tape, Rigby gets the new song stuck in his head.
  • Hipster: Mordecai shows traits of this in this episode, such as his taste for obscure music that puts Rigby to sleep.
  • Interrupted Catchphrase: Muscle Man is about to make a “My Mom” joke, until Rigby says that the Summertime Song tape is coming.
  • Literal-Minded: When Mordecai tells Rigby that they need to fight fire with fire to beat the Summertime Song tape, Rigby replies that fire will just go through it.
  • Loud of War: Once the Summertime Song manifests as a walking cassette tape, it harasses everyone in the park with its song. The Park Staff decide to fight back with a song of their own, "Aw, Snap!" The conflict between the two songs sends shockwaves echoing throughout the Park.
  • The Power of Rock: The battle between Mordecai's band and the Summertime Song tape is manifested as two ethereal rockers using their guitars as swords.
  • Start X to Stop X: If order for them to get rid of the Summertime Song tape, they decide to create an even more cheesy, catchy, and repetitive song.
  • Stylistic Suck: The Brain Explosion song Mordecai plays sounds intentionally made to be terrible, with the joke being that Mordecai is tasteless and out of touch for liking it.
