Recap / Power Rangers Zeo S1E18 Inner Spirit

Go To

Tommy has been having dreams about True of Heart, the old shaman who gave him an arrowhead half during the Zeo Quest. He soon meets a man named Sam Trueheart, who has some pertinent information about the former’s true origins.

Tropes:

  • Big Damn Heroes: As Tommy is about to lose, Sam appears in a vision to tell him how he can properly control the Red Battlezord.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Earth is safe, but the Zeo Megazord is crippled and Tommy has to struggle with both inner conflict and being the planet's sole line of defense.
  • Bond One-Liner: "He shoots, he scores!"
  • Call-Back: Billy designed the Red Battlezord following his trip to Aquitar and what he learned of their technology.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Zordon notes Tommy faces enormous responsibility now that the Red Battlezord is the only line of defense at the moment.
  • Finishing Move: The Red Battlezord's is a series of energy blasts from wrist-mounted barrels.
  • Flashback: The episode opens with one to when Tommy met True of Heart and received half of the arrowhead.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The Red Battlezord was still in the experimental phase, but the crippling of the Zeo Megazord required taking it into battle.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Tommy struggles with the Red Battlezord. His state of mind is key to controlling it, but as he's dealing with some issues right now, it's rough going. Sam tells him the key is to let go and be as one with his Zord instead of trying to control it.
  • Near-Villain Victory: The Zeo Megazord is badly damaged and Tommy only just barely masters the Red Battlezord in time.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Once Tommy figures out how to control the Red Battlezord properly, he punches the hell out of the Main Drain monster before finishing him. It's an especially satisfying bit of payback for what he did to the Zeo Megazord.
  • Plagued by Nightmares: Tommy keeps having nightmares about the Zeo Megazord being destroyed in battle with an unseen adversary.
  • Sequel Episode: The episode begins a storyline that follows up on Tommy's part of the Zeo Quest.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Mondo appears in the city to plead with the Rangers not to destroy his monster. While the Rangers are distracted, Main Drain launches a sneak attack that cripples the Zeo Megazord. It's especially notable because Main Drain was winning at that point, absorbing their attacks, the Rangers, despite frustrating him with the sword, were unable to even knock him down with the sword. They likely were caught off guard because this is typically where a monster would fire energy blasts to regain control of the battle.
  • You Look Familiar: An in-universe case this time, as noted by Tommy. Frank Salsedo who played the Indian Chief, True of Heart, returns to play his direct descendant, Sam Trueheart.
